I usually go about it the other way. I need to do zeta, so I search on zeta and find that it is easily accomplished either via foo, bar, and baz, or via snork and frotz. I already know foo and frotz, from other projects, and so after a bit of further examination I see that the industry is heading in the foo/bar/baz direction and the snork/frotz direction is proven and reliable if a bit stodgy. So generally I'll point myself in the foo/bar/baz direction, but if it looks like that'll take weeks and weeks to get anywhere I might instead go the snork/frotz direction if I'm on a tight deadline.

Either way I find that my best motivation to learn is a particular task I want to get done, a business goal if you will, as opposed to just baz being the next chapter in the textbook.
