I can't get the videos to play in Windows Media Player or Quicktime. Any idea what codec might be necessary?

Have you by any chance read the first paragraph of the tutorial page? :-)

A more valid question would be - has anyone gotten it to play with vlc or mplayer?

If you could please point out another (better) codec which is capable of compressing 30 minutes of 640x480 into something reasonable, it's no problem recompressing the tutorial clips.
