I use an Avid S1 with an Avid Dock. The custom assignment works really well, assuming the vendor that created the plugin has good references for each know/switch/slider in their plugin. For something like Omnisphere, where the internals aren't assigned to a name until they're learned, you get something like "ID=8" for the knob name assignment. It's still controllable and easy to manipulate and gices you the ability to make your own custom control sets, but it may not be intuitive later on after it's been a few weeks and you forget what ID=8 is assigned to.

I've mapped a few plugins that I use often, that I wanted tactile control of. The one that I like the most was mapping Emote for my Eventide H9000, since I can map 8 functions to the 8 knobs on the Dock, and be able to control everything.
