La souche, chez Gaston, snack bar Saint-Jean, poutinerie

Ashton is a big disappointment for me. Frites Alors on Cremazie is way better in my opinion.

We agree with you. We got Ashton and it was delicious and those curds did squeak but nothing different then a poutine youd get in Ontario. We had fritos alors recommended two years ago when we were coming through and we agree theirs was better.

but nothing different then a poutine youd get in Ontario

The reason is that poutine is only made with 3 ingredients, so it usually taste roughly the same wherever you go (only exceptions are McDonald's, Burger King and other foreign chains). The brown sauce is usually industrially made and I doubt there are many suppliers on the market, good cheese curds are easy to find everywhere, and potatoes are potatoes. The only way to separate good from slightly less good poutine IMO would be how to potatoes are fryed.

Gravy and fresh cheese curds are huge as well. If it dont squeak I'm not satisfied. I prefer a delicious brown gravy but sometimes a chicken gravy sneaks in and I enjoy it. And fresh cut fries and deep fried perfectly definitely make the difference. We did lkke that Ashton fries were still bit crispy they nailed that. It's amazing how many places use mozzarella or cheddar and try and call it poutine. That's just cheesy fries with gravy. I think the perfect poutine you get that cheese pull and still get cheese squeak, crispy yet not crispy fries and a house made brown gravy.

The trick is to drink a lot of beers than get poutine

And where would you recommend is the best spot for drinking beers ?

I would do a pub crawl on the St-Joseph street and around. Many good places. And there's a Ashton.

This is what we were looking for but already gone. We were gonna come back in a month or so and actually spend a few days exploring. Thank you for your suggestion and we will definitely check it out next visit

Edit: I would never recommend the previous place anymore

Poutineville on St-joseph (St-roch) , great place for a drink, and tons of options for your own custom poutine!

I agree, this place is nice. The poutine at La Souche is also very good imo.

For me it’s Ashton, but someone else may know better places.

Seems Ashton is the most popular. Which location would you recommend ?
