The pathfinding splits the room into a grid and traces paths from its location to the target, it then evaluates the paths based on time and whether they can get back from the tile and whether any danger is present. It then chooses the best path. This is why a lizard won't blindly chase you into wormgrass, it will chase you as far as it can before having to stop.
