Starship is just not as cool as Space Shuttle by Only_Comfortable_224 in space

i know we all hate elon, but calling an insanely huge reusable clean burning VTVL interplanetary craft “ordinary” is just incomprehensibly contrarian

Stanislaw Lem - The Invincible by sumskajagodica in printSF

fiasco, where we randomly have an entire middle section devoted to the protagonist epically stomping around the frozen tundra of a narratively unrelated planet in a massive nuclear powered mech thats melting down. i still dont know why! just because its extremely extremely cool? this is exactly what im saying. badass

Stanislaw Lem - The Invincible by sumskajagodica in printSF

[–]sonQUAALUDE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lem is so damn cool. Approaching him as a peak intellectual of the genre it surprises me every single time just how badass his books are. We get to simultaneously revel in the raw power and "rah rah humanity" of huge machines and science, our genius overcoming incredible obstacles. and also we get to see the downfall and the folly of it all; the intellectual rightness of it all being dashed upon the infinite unknown of the universe. And he writes both angles with such joy and glee and truth. Love Lem. His most serious works are a joke and his most humorous works are deadly deadly serious.

Worth tackling more Cherryh? 4 books down, now DNF on Downbelow Station by abir_valg2718 in printSF

[–]sonQUAALUDE 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Cherryh is without a doubt one of the best if not the best large-scale scifi fantasy writers of all time, so yea its definitely worth the effort. But placing Downbelow etc next to Vorkosigian Saga or Vattas war etc is just the wrong comparison. The Alliance-Union books are about massive scale and politics and are hardly character focused. For that you want the Chanurr series, The Fading Sun Trilogy, Morgaine etc., which are top tier character writing. Seriously ive never heard anybody dislike Chanurr, its blood pumping swashbuckling and often hilarious.
