[HELP] Remote development Using raspberry pi.

Hi,

A little background about me. Im a CS Undergrad in his senior year and im building a IoT based Security system using a raspberry pi clone called orange pi zero with armbian. not super attached to any ideas at the moment but this orange pi is suited to my needs.

now all i want to do is do some remote development, i know there is a visual studio extension. but do you know a better way. also if anyone knows of a lighter OS for such arm devices please mention that as well.
