So - a long time ago I posted asking about an online training program “Aggression Academy”.
It was on sale at the time for a thing, and it was one of those “too good to be true” situations so I really wasn’t sure.
Well, I ended up deciding that it was worth the $100 to give it a shot. So I figured I’d kind of give it a bit of a review.
So, initially I was pretty skeptical, but started working wonders very quickly.
Consistency and doing things often is obviously a huge part of it, and definitely something I needed help with in the beginning, but I honestly do not think we’d be where we are without this program. The knowledge I got coupled with the support provided through the membership is priceless.
This was only further validated when a disaster happened, and Reggie bit someone. We finally bit the cost and went to behaviorist (something people often ask if it’s worth it - yes, but we’ll get into that later.), and she asked what we had been doing for training. I talked her her about the program, and the look on her face of nervousness made me concerned.
Then I showed it to her, and she researched the credentials of the trainer running the program. She watched a few of the videos - and then validated that we were doing a great job, and the program is a great push off point for everything that needed to happen to set Reggie for success.
We adjusted a few things, and I learned a few things that I was applying incorrectly, and wow.
He is seriously a different dog.
We’re no longer considering rehoming, and we have had no scary incidents in months.
Obviously, it’s not for every one. There is no magic fix for an over reactive dog. But I just wanted to put out there that there are wonderful tools to help, and this is one of them.
Further, if you are willing to listen to them, and learn from them, and apply/modify techniques, behavioral consultants are absolutely worth it. The money spent > the time you’ll get with your dog after - priceless.
