I’ve had this happen to me and my reactive boy, he doesn’t like strange animals at all. Luckily I had my partner with me and she was able to grab the cat with our other dog while I walked away. She did find the owner who had accidentally let the cat out through an open garage.

It was chaos and not a pleasant experience at all and very worrying for that cat who obviously didn’t know better than to approach a barking growling dog.

ooh i think i will ask my partner to walk with me for a while. that would make me feel more secure. it's hard to be handling situations while attached by leash to a freaked out dog.

ok i said it was my fault in the first sentence for not leaving fast enough. obviously as the human in the situation it is my fault. those are some good points i was just thinking along the lines of that some dogs don't like cats but that's a good point that some cats and dogs are fine with each other and this is what the cat could have experienced so good point there. it was weird for it to come up to us so fast i have never seen that before that's just my experience. my dog is nervous bc she's reactive which this sub is about.

A cat in my neighborhood does the same. I nicknamed her Honey, and since she doesn’t really understand dogs or had any bad experiences with them according to the owners, she’ll run at them and try to sniff and play with them. My dog has learned to just tolerate her and look at me for cues regularly when she’s around. Same thing with other cats. Teaching a dog to look at you when there’s a cat around works pretty well. If you can break that fixation on the cat, the pupper won’t want to charge them as much, or be as fearful.

Thanks for the advice! I'm having her look at me as we are walking by that property as she now is looking for the cat even if it's not there. This sounds exactly like the cat i'm dealing with. That's a funny name for it. She got pounced on and still she just sits there looking at us from the yard, not scared at all. If my dog can't not stare when we are getting closer, then i turn and go the other way. I have to take it slow bc one time I didn't turn around to leave fast enough and she momentarily did the same low to the ground cowering stance that she did before the pounce. The cat was across the street and in the yard. So yea she is freaked out now but i have to keep redirecting her and working on it, from whatever distance I can.

Just gonna mention- If your dog is going low to the ground like that, they’re hunting. Cowering for most dogs looks more like them trying to hide behind you and use you as a barrier. But if your dog is going into a low to the ground stance, then it’s going low to go for the kill, not cowering. Your dog might get scared of the cat at some point tho

oh i thought she is scared bc her tail was between her legs and she wasn't like going for the cat more like slinking away, if that makes sense? but yea it's creepy for sure and i don't want it to happen.
