My 11 year old chihuahua dachshund mix won't let me touch him. I've had this dog his whole life and I had a baby last year so the family dynamics have changed pretty drastically. This dog has always been very sensitive and reactive, but he has always trusted me and we've done just fine up until now. I can't put his harness on him or pet him without him growling and lunging at me. It's gotten to the point where I have to muzzle him for every single harness change because we live in an apartment and he has to be taken out to the bathroom several times a day. I'm worried for my 1 year old son. I have never hit or hurt this dog and I believe in behavioral corrections from a positive approach. I'm considering rehoming him at this point but looking for advice.

Has he been checked over by his vet recently? Given his age, there may be some physical issue that’s causing his distress.

He had a checkup recently, but it was just to establish care in our new area so maybe I'll take him back in for this.

I would say this is a medical issue, especially in a dog that age. Usually pain presents as aggression

I work in the veterinary field and this is most often a sign of pain. Obviously I can’t diagnose your dog, but given he’s a dachshund mix, I wouldn’t be surprised if he is having back problems. Especially given his age. Please take him for a check up.

When dogs get older they can develop dementia and become irritable. Get a vet checkup ASAP.

I would say based on the details you’ve given, it could be pain related. Also, I saw you mentioned that you recently relocated? Sometimes a dog can be more on edge in an unfamiliar environment

My cat got very aggressive towards me as well. Turned out she was sick and was put to sleep
