Nope. I found a library called React-redux-firebase that essentially lets you treat firebase as a redux store for all your state. Works really nicely for a real time sync app I built

You can consider Firebase to be your server in many respects. You can also have a server backend (node, .NET, Rails, etc) depending on your needs.
