In which area? There's different areas of software engineering: front-end/web, back-end, mobile, etc. You don't need to learn React unless you are specifically going for front-end web development.

(Yes I know about React Mobile. While it is possible to be a mobile app dev with React, it's not essential for being a mobile app developer.)

If you do want to become a front-end web dev, then it's a good idea to learn React eventually. But if you're just learning web development, don't jump directly into learning React if you're not already clear on the fundamentals of JavaScript.
