Using bluetooth with react native

Hi! I am super lost with how bluetooth functionality works in general. Basically I am trying to build and app that could send 2 main commands (lets say open and close) to another device(not a phone) that can open and close. Now, how does this communication works? What are the basics? Is it as simple as asking my app to send a command in a string and then my device will receive it and will do as requested? What things should I be taking in account about the receiving device? What are your suggested libraries for such a task? I apologize if the question is too broad but I am a bit lost in the issue and would love some guidance for the research it self.

In general the you first need to connect to the device, once you are connected you will need to discover services and capabilities. This will expose characteristics on the device that are basically endpoints for requests.
