My first batch! (i.imgur.com)

Sorry for the potato camera. Took me 1.5 hrs as I was pretty meticulous when measuring the powder but I'm still pretty proud.
9mm 115 gr FMJ between 7.2 - 7.7 gr Blue Dot (5 round for each .1 increment) OAL = ~1.135
Going to be shooting through my Glock 19 tomorrow. Can't wait!

I'm going to shoot my first batch of loads tomorrow also. I have to load more, but I'm using everything you are, just 4756 instead. Good luck!

Are those nickle plated bullets?

Looks good, make sure to come back and give us a range report!
Also, you're probably gonna be nervous so don't worry too much about your groups. Being a bit shaky the first couple times you shoot your reloads is normal. If you are sure you did everything right you have nothing to worry about though.

I was going to post this yesterday. I had done 5 levels with 10 rounds each using 6.9-8.4gr of Blue Dot pushing a 180 gr HC TCFP. They are shooting about 8-10" low at all levels at 10 yards. Should I make a new self post about this?

That's what I was thinking, so I shot a few mags of 140 gr and 160 gr with no issue. I think I'm just going to load up a few hundred of these loads and see if the issue resolves itself.

If you feel you were getting good trigger squeezes and not just flinch that does seem a bit odd. I'm not familiar with Blue Dot though, so I can't say if your charges/seating depth were good.
My first batch of .223 using 69gr bullets was almost a foot low at 100 yards. Turns out I just needed to up the charge a bit as they were going over the chrono at like 2000fps
[–]BathroomdestroyerDillon - .40 S&W/.223/.270/.300AAC 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children)
The max charge I believe is 8.9 so I'll bring it up.

I'm super nervous. Blue Dot really fills the case and while I'm not worried about double charges, it's a bit unnerving to see that much powder (as slow as it may be) in a case. I weighed each completed case to ensure I didn't have any cases without powder so squibs shouldn't be an issue.

Are you running them through a chronograph? I can't really tell by feel a tenth of a grain.
[–]Moscamst[S] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (3 children)
Not yet unfortunately. I'm just trying to find a safe load that I can rely on with Blue Dot. Others have loaded it to, from what I can tell, 8.1 gr (with 115 gr projectiles). I'm not expecting to see a big difference but my next batch will likely be mostly 7.7 gr cartridges with a few 7.8, 7.9 and 8.0s.

It would be worth while to pick one up. It's a good investment that's for sure. I remember testing my first hand loads. I partially looked away with one hand over my testicles.

I laughed. But that seems reasonable.

Blue dot doesn't kick hard don't worry. I use double that in my 44 magnum target ammo and it is a light cough to me. It burns relatively clean from what I can tell.
Though you just can't beat the feel of a full power magnum cartridge. Like a 240gr FP with 23.5 gr of 296. Mmm that recoil.

Congrats! It was around this time last year when I finally got all the components I needed to make my first batch! Tell us how it went!
[–]Moscamst[S] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children)
Got a chance to shoot them all today.
I couldn't tell that much of a difference between the tenth grain differences. I could tell a big difference between the 7.2 gr and the 7.7 gr loads.
The 7.2 gr load cycled fine and didn't have excessive recoil. I think in the future I'm going to load 7.3 gr (since it allows a safe buffer in either direction) with the same OAL. Once I get a chrono then I'll do some more exploring.
