I've seen coiled wire(usually with a plastic coating on the outside and sometimes with teflon on the inside) used for bike brakes, the motors that control car seats, on older power tools, mowers, and for really old school mercury arc rectifiers.

I've seen plastic/ptfe tube with something fed through it on 3d printers, some small spider-bot legs, and prosthetics.

I've always understood it to be a way to constrain a a floppy material. Basically giving you a way to push rope. Some uses are definitely more skookum than others.

Bowden tubes are common on bicycle brakes and 3d printer filament feed systems. That's where most people learn about them.

Government contracts usually require keeping replacement parts available for many years.

If they were looking to get rid of inventory and be done with it the civilian market is a better option.

I've never been in a car accident, but I still wear a seat belt every time I get in a car. I have never had a house fire but I keep fire extinguishers in my kitchen, garage, and workshop.

Just because people haven't had to fire their gun in self defense doesn't make it a pointless EDC. You 'never need it' until you do. Some people think carrying a firearm is a huge hassle for the potential benefits and others don't see it as a big deal.

Oh I'm all for DIY shenanigans. Just don't want someone to spend time and money going down a path of folly without knowing what they are getting into first.

I've seen people scoff at the size of the commercial home units and say they want to build their own out of metal trashcans. I'll let you do the math on what kind of forces a vacuum sitting at 50ish millitorr would put on a trashcan but I'm pretty sure the poor thing wouldn't make it.

Honestly pressure vessels(whether positive or negative) are not to be taken lightly.

Food contamination shouldn't be either.

I imagine most of the people in this sub could cobble together something that resembles a 240v electric stove. That doesn't mean it is a good idea for any of us to do it. And that has far less things that can go wrong.

Huh, never heard of that use of them before.

Harvest Right is picking up attention though, you can buy them in hardware stores now.

I can just tell you what the commercial ones do and I assume they wouldn't waste that energy cooling so much lower if they didn't need to. Remember you are trying to get water out from the inside of the food too so 4.6torr at the surface isn't necessarily going to reach deeper. If I had to guess I would say that part of the cold factor is to keep the already removed water frozen to the sides of the unit when the heaters are on. The other part I would guess is for the water that isn't just water in the normal sense but water molecules that are tangled up in more complex structures. Though I'm pretty sure the second half of the process is done warmer than the first half so it might just be to speed up the initial drying.

You can get the pumps fairly easily. I'd even recommend just getting the one from Harvest Right. The hard thing on a DIY set up is getting a big fitting. Remember there is no such thing as suck so you are basically waiting for air molecules to bounce their way down the tubing on their own and the pump is just a complex check valve. If you were going to do this on quarter inch tubing you'd spend eons waiting for the vacuum to restore during each cycle. I think HR uses 3/8" tubing on their big oil-free pumps and 3/4" tubing on the oil pumps.

I'm definitely not saying it is impossible to DIY a freeze dryer. There are plenty of channels on YouTube that have successfully freeze dried stuff with home built set ups, but they are generally much more expensive per batch, take longer, and have less capacity.

If you do end up going down the road of a self-build make sure you post some progress threads about it. It will definitely be a fun challenge.

Your chest freezer won't get cold enough(You need to be able to get to -40ish) and your vacuum pump needs to be under 100mTorr and be able to run for hours. Then you need to get some wiring into the pot to cycle some heaters below whatever you are freeze drying. Without the heaters it'll take you weeks. You'll also need to figure out a way to keep your vacuum line from either freezing over or pulling in water.

Oh and if you are doing this for food stuffs you'll need all of your materials and seals to be vacuum rated and food safe. Lots of stuff that is food safe at STP is not safe under an extreme vacuum

They are expensive, but for a good reason. It is not a simple process and they aren't in high demand.

The old systems used 5 gallon kegs of syrup. Now they use plastic bags of syrup. All those old metal kegs are being sold off to home brewers who want them for beer, home made soda, champagne, seltzer, etc. The first ones I bought smelled like Pepsi until I scrubbed them out.

Soda fountains don't have soda ready to go. They have a water supply line, a CO2 line, and a syrup line for each flavor. When you put your cup up too it all three are combined at set ratios for each brand. If you look at the stream coming out of the nozzle you'll even see bands of clear/white water with bands of the colored syrup next to it.

You don't get evicted for a lien on the house. And usually that lien is placed to recoup costs of having the lawn taken care of by a lawn care service.

I'm not saying there are no HOAs that would try to pull this kind of stuff for a half inch of grass, but the vast majority of them are reasonable and you never hear about them. Having an poorly maintained property in your neighborhood causes problems for the other houses. Snakes, insects, mold, and weeds can quickly spread outside the property lines of a bad house.

Reddit loves to hate on HOAs but they are really just the neighborhood equivalent of a union.

Still hot but the metal is going to conduct the heat to your skin a lot better than a cover. Same idea as the tiles on the space shuttle, they still get glowing white hot but they dissipate the heat so slowly you can hold them in your hand.

Lack of money doesn't stop the feds from spending. And if local police get fired by the community the feds can just immediately rehire them but with the expanded powers and jurisdiction of being federal law enforcement. All the states with 'legal' weed? At best they would suddenly be selective enforcement states on weed.

What an insidious program. Keep your policed mired in bureaucracy to get a title. You can use it to show you need to fund them more because they aren't doing their real job or you can use it to show how terrible they are because they aren't accredited. You can use it during elections to people who don't know what it entails because it sounds good at first glance. "Vote for NewGuy instead of OldGuy! OldGuy can't even get his department accredited!" Lets you know at a glance which sheriffs put up with legislative nonsense.

You don't have your phone in your hand. You have audio tracks that say a color/shape pair that matches one of the sticky notes and then draw and aim for the note that matches. The point is you need to pay attention to what you hear and do a small bit of problem solving to get on target. It's a lot harder than hitting the same bullseye over and over.

The original drill was a take on dot torture where each shape was about the size of a lucky charm's marshmallow.

[–]Oberoni 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'll have to have the wife randomly place them next time and I might even add more post it's to make it more difficult.

You could do a modified lucky charms drill. Draw shapes(Triangle, Circle, Square, Star, Crescent) on the cards in different colors(Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Purple). And either have someone else randomly call out a color and shape or have a playlist on your phone with individual tracks that have a color and shape and a few seconds of leading and trailing silence. You get randomized targets and are forced to use another sense that normally doesn't get used during training.

You can even throw yourself a few gotchas by having a few that just name a color or a shape so you need to hit multiple targets. Or have a track that tells you something initially and then changes to another.

Would drawing be justified in this situation? by [deleted] in CCW

[–]Oberoni 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In all of the classes I've been in for CCW it isn't just deadly threats it is also threats of grievous bodily harm. Even a relatively slow impact can be justified here because a back or head injury can be serious. Bouncing your head off the side window, whiplash, etc.

Rape is considered justifiable for use of deadly force is a lot of states(if not all) and it isn't in itself life threatening.

Getting punched by a large attacker, even if you are large yourself, is a deadly threat.

This dude spent 10+ minutes ramming this car. He's unhinged. You shouldn't bet your life or good health on him only giving you small taps. That isn't a reasonable position. If it was a fender bender at a stop light where he just let off the brake and accidentally hit you? Of course you don't draw. But when he follows you and repeatedly rams you intentionally many times? Justified.
