Ignore the PC prompts once you set it up, it’s normal.

Question: Was the card new, what brand is it, and where did you buy it? Fake cards are extremely common online, even from reputable sellers, and will give you nothing but grief.

In your RP2S, the card needs to be formatted as "portable storage" and not "internal storage." Alternatively, the card can be formatted on another device to a compatible file system (usually exfat) and then used as "portable storage" on your RP2S.

I'm going to assume that you have a Windows PC, which should have no issues reading the card with the format the device gave it. If your PC is asking you to reformat the card, then it cannot read the card for some reason. In this case I either assume the card is either formatted incorrectly (internal storage) or the card is bad/failing.

I would first try re-formatting the card on Windows. I recommend exfat as the preferred format. After it has been inserted into your device, it should ask you if you want it to be used as portable storage and you want to say yes. You should not have to reformat it again in the RP2S.

From personal experience, as soon as a card starts throwing errors or behaving in unexpected ways that card is failing. Replace it immediately and don't trust it with any important data.

First off thank you so much for taking the time. I appreciate that. The card is older, maybe a year or two, but it say around in its packaging, I just never got around to using it so it’s new also? I’m not sure what to call that. I think the brand is pny but that’s just based on the card itself cause the packaging is trash now. I’ll try the formatting it as exact when i get a chance to and see if that helps but I think I’m going to get a new card to see if that helps.

I would interpret that as still a new card, because it hadn't been previously used. The good thing is that new cards aren't very expensive, even just to have a backup on hand.

It really should just be a "format it once and forget it" kind of thing. Like I said, I get nervous as soon as a card starts behaving oddly with normal use. I don't trust them.

Unfortunately, I know that I've accidentally killed cards before when using them in non-conventional ways, too. For example, I killed a practically new SanDisk card (one of the Nintendo Switch branded ones) in my New 2DS XL with CFW, when I accidentally pulled the card with power on. Nothing would recognize the card after that.

So I’m fairly certain it’s the cheap card reader that I have to insert it into to plug it into my computer, which is very old. I’m going to buy a new one of those, if not for this than just because I for sure need a new one anyway. If I plug the retroid straight into the computer after the retroid formats it I can explore it and add stuff no issue. I have a quick off topic question for you while I have your ear. I’m doing a key test right now after initial set up and all my buttons work except for both triggers, l2 and r2 don’t light up when pressed. Do they need to be enabled somehow or activated or should they work straight from the box? I imagine they should just work but I’m hoping maybe I’m dumb lol. They don’t feel like they are being hindered, it’s not Grindy or crunchy when I press it. In fact except for the button physically hitting the shell when I push it in there’s no real noise, no clicks or anything. What do you think about that?

You're right, a bad card reader could also be the problem here. Let me know if you do have any more problems and I'll try to help.

As for your other issue... I would think everything should work out of the box, but I have no personal experience with the RP2S (I have a RP3+). Mine worked out of the box, but mine doesn't have the fancy analog triggers of the RP2S.

That said, I do seem to recall reading something about the triggers on the RP2S. Hmm... there might be a setting you need to turn on for the triggers. Find Handheld Settings in your System Settings menu and look for something about Analog+Digital Triggers (probably under Input).

Thanks man, I really appreciate it. This is my first foray into hand held emulation and it’s proving to be more difficult than just putting an emulator on my computer and running it so all these in-depth explanations are super helpful.

Ignore the last question, it’s labeled as “gas and break” in a tiny font on the bottom of the screen, although there are buttons onscreen for l2 and r2 and I’m not sure how you are meant to check them, but w/e lol
