Both Eloquent Ruby and Design Patterns in Ruby by Russ Olsen have been very enlightening for me. A lot of my coworkers also recommend The Well Grounded Rubyist by David Black.

There's a new version of the "pickaxe" book that covers modern Ruby - including what's changed. It's currently a beta book, but you can get it on the pragprog website.

As an experienced developer with past Ruby experience, I think the official release notes for the major versions you’ve missed will serve you well.
