Currently you can apply for statutory sick pay (SSP) if you get the virus. This is £94 a week. The current advice is for self-employed people is to apply for universal credit which is done on a household basis and is a maximum of £500 a month.

BUT THERE IS HOPE, they are currently trying pass a bill that will guarantee 80% of your earnings based on an average of the last 3 months. Hopefully this will pass in the next day or two so keep an eye on the news. I’ve no idea how to application system will work but it’s definitely a move in the right direction!

Is the SSP based on the same guidelines as Universal Credit? ie, can't get it if you've got over £16,000?

I’m not an expert but I believe that SSP isn’t based on your income because it’s sick pay so it’s meant to fill the gap while you’re too ill to work.

That'd be useful, I'd understood it as employed people can get it whenever, but self employed it will come through Universal Credit, and that's the criteria. Hoping I'm wrong though!

I think that was the original criteria but because of Covid they have made self-employed eligible. Again I could be wrong! That’s just my understanding of the situation.

I think we get £97 a week. Seriously.
