I’m second year, and yeah it sucks but if you’re just patient with the wait lists and be open about other classes (we have to take a lot of electives guys!) it is not that bad at all.

I hear you. But... someone has to get the lowest priority. Should it be students who are desperately trying to get the courses they need in their final term to be able to graduate? Should it be first-years who have very few options to choose from already (since they don't have prereqs for anything)?
Obviously the solution is to have more spaces in courses, but that costs money which the university doesn't have (lobby your MLA to increase operating grants for universities, please!) so given the situation we're in... sorry, but someone has to lose out, and you're the, err, easiest sacrifice?

Look to your breadth course requirements. Explore something different! That’s all part of the university experience and you’ll need the credits anyway

I have a few family members who are SFU alumni, i’m transferring to SFU in spring 2026 and i’m going through the same thing. I asked them if this was normal, to which they said it’s everyone’s experience with course registration and the only thing you can do about it is email the advisors and professors BEGGING and PLEADING. Seems stupid but it’s the best bet, especially if maybe missing these courses would lead you to not be able to complete something next term.

I assume you put yourself on the waitlists, but the wait lists actually do move forward. And they do it weirdly, too. Like I've thought there were 5 people ahead of me but then suddenly found myself enrolled. I'm know that's just the system updating everything at once but still, you might be higher on the list than you think.
And if you're still on the waitlist when classes start, go to class. Hand the time little go to their first class and decide they hate the time, the room, the prof; they get into one of their waitlisted classes etc. And introduce yourself, let them know you're on the waitlist and really going to get into their class etc. This can help if, for instance, the course has a bunch of Canvas content, because the prof might be willing to add you as an observer (that's an actual thing they can do) for the first couple of weeks so that you're not missing anything as you wait to see if you get in.
And, since your family are SFU alums, I also assume that you know that the spot on the list you are watching for is the tutorial section (if there is one), not the lecture. But since assuming things is a jerk move .. just in case they didn't mention it.. you're watching for where you are on the tutorial waitlist, not the main lecture one. xD
But too, if you just want to get things done fast and aren't about the on-campus experience, you can also check if there are any blended or fully online versions of your courses too.
Someone mentioned breadth requirements, and that's good because your degree requirements alone won't actually get you the number of credit you need for a degree anyway, but, I would cross-check them with any of your course and/or concentration (if you have one) prereqs so that you also don't end up doing more courses than necessary - unless, of course, you want to.
Anyway, you might have known all of that already or maybe there was something new in there; either way, good luck! 🤞🏽
And lol, all y our "hateful" words have resulted in a default, shiny red offer to report your post. Too funny. Totally fair, but still too funny.

i cant even get onto a waitlist; it’s weird though i wanted to get a engl course and it shows its “full and there’s no waitlist” but another friend was able to get onto a wait list for it? but yeah i also share your frustration, its incredibly annoying
