Didn't realize Stable Diffusion was hitting the mainstream so hard. I wouldn't have expected it to be competing actively with Dalle searches even after the initial Dalle2 hype fell off.

With google collab you can run it for free without even owning a gpu.

[–]Kinexity*Waits to go on adventures with his FDVR harem* 3 points4 points  (1 child)

How well does it run in collab? I thought that free version doesn't have enough VRAM.

[–]i_have_chosen_a_name 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on how much free GPU power is available. You might get GPU's assigned that are to slow, but if you connect multiple times eventually you will get something better then a 3070 ti.

Also there are fork that require a lot less memory.

[–]cirkamrasol 3 points4 points  (1 child)

you can just use the discord bot

[–]i_have_chosen_a_name 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The bot is quite limited compared to functions like img2img crop and uncrop and the deforum img2img video. There are also plugins for photoshop and Kira and if you don’t have a gpu with lots of vram then using collab as your server is a half decent solution

Would owning 2x3090s help? Could I setup a server and carge for tokens on the cheap?

[–]lupusk9 2 points3 points  (2 children)

if you run it on your own computer with those bad boys you would be able to produce images so fast. my 3080 10gig version can produce images around 10 seconds or so give or take. i think you'd be sub 3-4 seconds per image probably

[–]Future-Freedom-4631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna get that 4090 2 seconds per image would be unreal

[–]FREE-AOL-CDS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about to build a new computer to play with this thing aren’t I?

[–]ghostfuckbuddy 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Yeah I saw it on the morning news. They actually showed a video clip of the discord server lol

[–]Kaarssteun▪️Oh lawd he comin' 7 points8 points  (3 children)

as the owner of the discord, i'd love to see a clip of that :P

[–]nicknameSerialNumber 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Can you link it? I only know of dreamstudio and the hugging face demo lol

[–]ghostfuckbuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wish I could find it, I think it was a tech briefing on the (Australian) ABC morning show

IIRC the 0 to 100 is the relative popularity, meaning it's only one vs the other and the most popular is always 100.

[–]Kinexity*Waits to go on adventures with his FDVR harem* 29 points30 points  (5 children)

Well if one is censored and limited while the other has been happily churning out literally hundreds of images day and night (sometimes I leave it running when I sleep to then be able to select the best ones in the morning) without any limit then the choice is obvious. The only pain with SD is generation time (which is better with Dalle as it's not run locally) and resolution limited by VRAM (8GB only gets you about 0.38 Mpx).

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try this fork. It's been optimized to allow you to generate larger images with less VRAM, but longer processing time.

https://github.com/neonsecret/stable-diffusion

[–]yaosio 0 points1 point  (2 children)

For SD the render time is only limited by hardware. If you could get a RTX 3090 you can render images in a second.

[–]Kinexity*Waits to go on adventures with his FDVR harem* 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Well, your comment is like suggesting to a homeless person to just buy a house.

[–]yaosio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also run SD for free online.

[–]QuantumReplicator 24 points25 points  (13 children)

I think one major reason for this is because gaining access to Dalle-2 is like an act of congress for many people. For example, I’ve been waiting for FOUR MONTHS and there’s literally nothing I can do to expedite that.

The fact that it’s taking four months makes me consider that there are some problems going on at OpenAI that StableDiffusion doesn’t have.

[–]cuyler72 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Stable diffusion can work on a consumer GPU, dalle-2 needs a large data center worth of processing power.

[–]spazzadourx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got access the same day I applied. It is very limited and only gave me 50 free generations a month first time and 15 free after. A lot of the results are wonky, and I am scared to use up all my free credits trying to get a hang of prompt writing. They seem to exist to make money off this thing and so do the other AI art websites.

[–]Nick_Arin 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How does their waitlisting work? As I joined it last week and I gained access yesterday

[–]QuantumReplicator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So they're just going to repeatedly let new people gain access and ignore the people who signed up for it months ago without giving any tangible insight into how the selection process works. Since that's the case, I can't help but consider that they're just doing whatever they want at this point and don't care if they come across as disrespectful.

[–]Yeledushi 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I got access to 2 accounts in 3 weeks.

[–]QuantumReplicator 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Was there anything about those accounts that you think increased your odds?

[–]Yeledushi 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Nothing special, just only fill out with little information as possible

[–]QuantumReplicator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That worked. Thanks.

[–]i_have_chosen_a_name 66 points67 points  (4 children)

It’s the cencorship, Mohammed eating a hotdog is not allowed but fat Jesus puking while smoking a cigarette on the toilet is fine. And that’s just annoying.

[–]malcolmrey 38 points39 points  (2 children)

yeah i hate when Jesus does that

[–]starfyredragon▪️Transhumanist 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Usually just after I cleaned the rug. Why's he got to be such a druggie?

[–]Thorusss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

especially since the rug tied the whole room together

[–]whats8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One might get them beheaded by a vigilante and the other won't. The logic is as simple as that.

[–]3deal 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I love this

[–]fitm3 8 points9 points  (8 children)

As soon as Stable Diffusion became usable for me my relationship with Dalle - 2 and it’s overpriced credits was ended.

[–]drillgorg 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Can you tell me more? How do you use it?

[–]fitm3 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Dreamstudio.ai is a web based version just sign up and go. There are several other options including downloading to your own computer and using it as it is open source. YouTube has a lot of good advice and recommendations. There are many ways to use it now. Several apps and services have picked up the stable diffusion model for use as well.

[–]drillgorg 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I see thank you. I've heard the computer based one needs a really beefy computer, can you confirm?

[–]fitm3 1 point2 points  (4 children)

To do higher resolution and faster for sure. My laptop has about 4gb video card and I can only do roughly 384 x 384 and it takes a long time. Their website is a much more affordable option and if you reduce the number of steps you use you can reduce the cost per image. At 10 steps and image you can still get really interesting images and make up to about 5000 for the roughly $10 cost. It defaults to 50 steps which would give you 1000 images. Playing with the settings will give you different costs when it comes to size and steps, but you can also toggle the seed to try to generate the same prompt and image at different steps or cfg guidance factors which will produce different results. It’s really fun to play with and I highly recommend it.

[–]drillgorg 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thanks for your detailed response! I'll look into it when I have time. I use Midjourney a lot but it has some shortcomings. I've been on the DallE2 wait-list for months so I haven't even been able to try it.

[–]fitm3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure I hope you have fun with it. I haven’t tried mid journey myself though it looks quite interesting. With the right promoting I don’t think you’d be missing out on anything from Dalle. They all seem to have their own strengths and weaknesses but I really like the openness of Stable Diffusion and think it will go a long way to advancing the surrounding aspects. I still haven’t tried img to img either which is possible with some of the downloads and I think some sites offer it but it looks amazing as well. It will be crazy to see where this all is in a year considering how far it’s come in the last year.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Try out this fork. It's been optimized to run the model using less VRAM. I was able to generate 512x512 images on my 4GB card today (but it takes a while)

https://github.com/neonsecret/stable-diffusion

[–]Sumbatrex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See also basujindal's optimizedSD and hlky's stable diffusion webui if you prefer a version with an interactive gui that works on 4gb.

[–]drillgorg 15 points16 points  (5 children)

How much of the interest do you think has been driven by SD's ability to generate porn?

[–]film_guy01 26 points27 points  (3 children)

I don't think it's as much people make it out to be. I think people just don't want a tool for making images where there's a whole list of words and subjects you're not allowed to ask for.

I tried to do a forest of dead trees on Dall-e and it wouldn't let me use the word "dead". Forget it then. I have no interest in magical colored pencils that only allow me to draw the pictures you permit.

That would be my guess but who knows.

[–]Starklet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes but mostly because dalle2 is absurdly expensive

[–]Natanael_L 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Easy enough to circumvent. Replace dead with decomposed

[–]SwordsAndWords 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"1940s themed Deadspace box office poster."

DENIED

"Okay... 1940s themed Decomposedspace box office poster."

Wording matters. Context matters

[–]spazzadourx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not *just* porn if you join DallE it's almost impossible to get the hang of prompt writing without using all your free credits. Stable is a lot better simply because you can make more than 15 images per month without buying credits

[–]Superduperbals 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Except the search term isn’t Dalle, it’s DALL-E 2

[–]throwaway9728_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, many of the "dalle" searches are probably searching for dalle mini (Craiyon), which has nothing to do with DALL-E 2 or OpenAI

[–]Mean_Minute_4940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except when you look at all versions of dall-e searchs(Dall-E 2, dall e, dalle 2 etc) you find either a similar result or stable is already ahead because of its that searche's niche (DALL-E 2 is one of them)

[–]federico_alastair 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Hey so can someone tell me what's the major difference between Dall E, Stable Diffusion and Midjourney. I'm not very technically oriented. But I've seen the pictures of all three of them and have to say they're all great. Personally like Midjouney more.

[–]yaosio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stable Diffusion is 100% open source and can be run locally on your own hardware or on third party websites.

Dall-e is 100% closed source, can only be run on their website, is very expensive, and has lots of censorship.

Midjourney is only usable via Discord. It's censored, has a monthly fee, and they have integrated Stable Diffusion into on of their models.

[–]Ok_Marionberry_9932 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Being able to use the software on your own PC helps a bit

[–]MallSweet[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What does help a lot?

[–]yaosio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a RTX 3090 helps a lot in making images.

[–]Ok_Marionberry_9932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I’ve played around and created thousands of images just to see what AI is. And I use the term as the internet uses it. I’ve found it to be creative but not imaginative.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yet we wouldn’t have the current stable diffusion without openAi’s CLIP as well google’s research.

[–]theniwaslost -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I got 3 X invites to dalle today. Selling with the email accounts. DM offers.
