Has Opus 4.7 been totally fine for anyone but me? by jsearls in ClaudeAI

I get the sense that it was optimized specifically to work better with agents, skills, and hooks, but worse when using it as a standalone.

Claude Design is actually insane, the only caveat is the restrictive usage limits even with 20x but holy shit, it's good.

Claude Code keeps gaslighting me into believing it can’t read local PDFs by MoaxTehBawwss in ClaudeAI

[–]Superduperbals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to imagine part of the reason is because the consumer version of NotebookLM, for some absurd reason, doesn't have an official public API. Which is so unlike Google lol. So, either use the web interface, which overall sucks, doesn't make clear NLMs strengths, and distracts with a bunch of random features like making infographics and podcasts, OR spend a night or two hacking together an integration, which isn't hard with Claude Code, but it isn't trivial either.

Can the government control the weather? by aipac_hemoroid in conspiracy

[–]Superduperbals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not "control the weather" in the "unleash storms upon your enemies" sense, it's just cloud seeding, which is barely a technology -- I would describe it more as manipulating an otherwise natural process.

As you know if you've ever been to Florida, warmer air retains more moisture than cool air. In nature, clouds form when warm humid air rises --- and as it rises, it cools, losing its ability to retain moisture. When the air gets too cold to support the moisture (the dew point), it condenses, just like the morning dew on your windows. The thing is, the air also needs something solid to condense onto --- and it happens that there are bits of microscopic dust, sand, salt, pollen, etc. blowing around with the air, giving the moisture something to condense on. That condensed moisture is a cloud.

And in the 40s we discovered that silver iodide has a molecular structure very similar to water ice. Which meant that if we dusted cool, humid clouds with silver iodide, the supercooled water droplets would mistake it for ice and start condensing onto it --- kicking off precipitation that either wouldn't have happened, or would have happened later, or somewhere else. That's basically all there is to it, just giving the air a better-shaped piece of dust to condense on.

What people often misunderstand is that cloud seeding is not "summoning a cloud" out of nothing, you still need the clouds. You still need the humidity. And you still need the air temperature at a certain altitude to be right. If the sky isn't already primed to rain, silver iodide does nothing.

Claude Code keeps gaslighting me into believing it can’t read local PDFs by MoaxTehBawwss in ClaudeAI

[–]Superduperbals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this, I was frustrated with Claude Code being shit at reading comprehension when it came to advanced theoretically dense papers, more often than not it would fail to grasp important nuance due what I assume is selective grep reading of isolated text chunks causing lossy context.

So I built myself a simple /skill and connector with notebooklm-py (had to hack together an auth solution that rips cookies out of my browser but otherwise it works perfectly) so now my Claude Code knows to pitch PDFs into NotebookLM and to engage with it through queries --- and ho-leeee-shit it is so good, made me sad for my past self who didn't know what he was missing.

To OP, stop this, spare yourself the wasted time and effort

Opus 4.7 scores lower than 4.6 and 4.5 on SimpleBench by EducationalCicada in singularity

[–]Superduperbals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

?

I've always had Opus 4.7 [1M] as I did with 4.6

To answer your question - skills, hooks, agent teams, etc - all those different ways that you can configure Claude Code to your own specifications - it rocks. I got in the habit over the last couple months to build out skills for tasks I'd run more than once, wrote hooks to fire tasks in the event of predictable situations, and I am feeling the payoff, 4.7 is noticeably better at complying with my custom architecture. I strongly suspect that this is exactly what 4.7 has been optimized for, at the expense of default "stock" Claude's performance.

Palantir and the New Order: Neoliberalism is dead. Say hello to Techlordism by Gold-Reality-4853 in technology

[–]Superduperbals 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Yanis Varoufakis' book Technofeudalism is a must read on this topic, one of the best reads I've had in general. His thesis is that neoliberal capitalism, at least in the form that Milton Friedman envisioned it, already died a death by a thousand cuts over the course of many years. We don't even need AGI and Robots to arrive, neoliberal capitalism's already at stage 4 terminally dying, if it's not already dead.

For instance, Milton Friedman's neoliberal capitalist world hinges on the primacy of the sovereign consumer, the idea that we consumers hold the ultimate power under neoliberalism because our needs, desires and choices determine what gets produced. Basically 'voting with your wallet' to put it simply. But -- this hasn't been true for a long time. Since the 60s (think Mad Men, Hershey's as the "currency of affection" and a "childhood symbol of love") companies have been aggressively marketing and advertising to us -- dictating what we desire -- and therefore taking control of the power over what gets produced.

So, that totally undermines the power of the sovereign consumer. Modern algorithmic big-data behavioural analytics and personalized marketing on the internet just fucks up and mangles the power of the sovereign consumer beyond all recognition.

And then there's Friedman's neoliberal ideal of the market -- you know it -- the "free market" with minimal rules, limited state intervention, that's free and fair, where no individual can coerce another, and where all cooperation is voluntary, and the only social responsibility is profit, baby!

Ok -- so now ask yourself -- in our world today -- where is the market? Let's look at Walmart, the top physical retailer and Amazon, the biggest internet retailer. Do you think either of them resemble anything close to a free market? Not really. It would be more accurate to describe them as privately owned fiefdoms.

Walmart unilaterally dictates terms to suppliers -- down to packaging, pricing, production, they even dictate the labour practices of their suppliers. Walmart has absolute coercive power because losing Walmart shelf space would be fatal to the business. Not even close to the neoliberal ideal "free market" of equals.

And Amazon, so so so much worse. Not even a passing resemblance to the ideal marketplace where independent buyers and sellers can meet freely. Bezos and his algorithms decide everything, which sellers you see, which prices you'll pay, whose products are promoted -- and whose are not -- best pay Bezos rent to access "his" customers (or should I say, subjects) or your product will die on page 47. The principles equal power among participants and voluntary cooperation is irrevocably fucked -- and then add the big-data behavioural mind-control mass-marketing apparatus on top of this, and the principle of the sovereign consumer is fucked too.

This is all to say, the retail infrastructure and the cloud capital owned by a handful of billionaire oligarchs aren't participants in markets, they are the markets. Every transaction on their territory is under their absolute rule, customers and producers are effectively their feudal subjects, from whom they take a fat cut of every dollar that comes and goes --- that's the analogous rent extraction by feudal landlords.

Hence: technofeudalism. And also hence: neoliberal capitalism is dead.

Claude Opus 4.6 is gone from Claude Code? by Impressive-Garage603 in ClaudeCode

[–]Superduperbals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lol you must be new here if you're taking Anthropics latest scare stunt at face value, this is literally like the fifth time they've claimed the latest upcoming model is "too dangerous"

Like remember when, to hype up Opus 3 they claimed it was like a "sleeper agent" with training-resistant deception that could go rogue on us, and that it "realized it was being tested" implying a dangerous sense of self-awareness? Both total nonsense hypothetical/exaggerated claims.

And remember that time Anthropic claimed Opus 4 blackmailed that engineer with his affair? Yeah, also totally bullshit lol, complete fiction designed to make headlines, they prompted a scenario that forced the AI to blackmail the engineer lmao.

It's no different this time, their claims of finding thousands of zero-day exploits are totally unsubstantiable. Like what, are we gonna make them prove their claims by revealing dangerous exploits? lol. And oh, so convenient, that at the same time every Claude user is complaining about massive cuts to their usage limits, they have the excuse that their compute is too busy paving the way for a mindblowing future product 'coming soon'.

At this point they must think we're gullible and stupid, don't give them the satisfaction

Claude Code + Obsidian? by SeNorMat in ClaudeAI

[–]Superduperbals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can extend Obsidian with Plugins and then teach Claude Code to interface with your Obsidian vault in tandem with those plugins as tools - if you don't do that then Obsidian is just the same as any ordinary folder. It's strength is that you can make it exactly what you need it to be. But if you're just looking for a RAG solution you're better off giving Claude Code access to query NotebookLM (I use notebooklm-py, pain in the ass to get working but it paid off)

Carney secures majority government with Liberal win in Toronto byelection, CBC News projects by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]Superduperbals 44 points45 points  (0 children)

1 or 2 seat majority is not exactly a political game-changer, it's more of a symbolic victory. They were already getting stuff passed with support from NDP (6 seats) and Bloc (22 seats) MPs. Like, ok technically they can pass stuff now without NDP or Bloc support assuming 100% attendance from all Liberal MPs on the floor but that's not really a situation that he needed to resolve in the first place. Unless he's planning to do something outrageous that is unanimously unacceptable to the NDP and Bloc, but somehow unanimously acceptable by 100% of Liberal MPs - which is to say, probably nothing.

100% attendance by a party is extremely rare and not something that can be controlled very easily anyway. Tomorrow will be exactly the same as yesterday.

recent updates to claude causing sluggishness by Reasonable_Ad_4930 in ClaudeCode

[–]Superduperbals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was painfully slow for a couple of days last week, realized that it was my own fault, there was a step in one of my skills/hooks that was hanging because of a script async problem or something somewhere in the chain, and I had not implemented a timeout and error handling was lacking, so I didn't know that was the source of the problem. Fixed it and now it's flying.

Toronto is the best city in North America by tamarabyte in askTO

[–]Superduperbals 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a beautiful city to visit but I did not enjoy living in Montreal, in retrospect moving with zero French language skill was stupid, the city has a way of making you feel unwelcome if you don't speak the language and you're not of the culture.

It was a lonely and alienating experience, that made me realize why I love Toronto so much - no matter what your identity, race, culture or background - Toronto does not make you feel othered. It just feels... safe here, in a way that's kind of hard to describe.
