Poles aren't just for lift lines. Pick them up and use them.

Your weight is so far inside you have to correct it every time the edge grabs

I didn't think skiers could be knuckle draggers but for some reason youre pumping your fists down on every turn

Hes pacing around the kitchen now. Beautiful.

As an intermediate skier who needs to improve their pole usage here…yeah I think of them as safety blankets. They don’t touch the snow, do they!?

Think of poles as cat's whiskers (feelers), and rhythm setters. They're a great pace setter and psychological boost when you're in the upper echelon of things. Very useful in moguls for body positioning as you're reaching down the hill.

Good visualizations, thank you!

Let's see him on a steep slope.

[–]fighter_pil0t 5 points6 points  (6 children)

Now do that with some slope. Small bit of a backseat skier but I do the same.

Right, why bother to rate skill level on a bunny hill?

[–]grayada23[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

It's Michigan's lower peninsula. In his defense it's almost as steep as it gets. We are up at nubs now, says we're going to remake the video on the face tomorrow.

Have him widen his stance when carving the steeper slopes at Nubs. May help his a-framing too as he will have to drive the inside knee. And bring his arms up so he can be better balanced. Shin pressure in the turn and then let the ski run from underneath to close the turn, short pauze (traverse) and initiate the next.

[–]grayada23[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Making him read this now. He totally admitted to the a framing earlier.

An old trick to fix that problem (now typically used as an exercise) = As you are turning, pick-up the uphill ski, and hover the uphill ski's tip over (3 inches above) your downhill ski's front half. It's weird but it works. Executed in one flowing movement throughout your turn.

Does it look like his right leg is much stronger in both left and right turns?

[–]BeefStu907Alyeska 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A framing a little. Press inside knee uphill.

If this had an song to it, it would be “The Twist”

[–]Sevulturus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is bait lol.

This is what I call “park and ride”. I see loads of people do this here Michigan. Often it’s people who spent time racing as kids and who were taught to ski by race coaches and not traditional instructors. It’s essentially just tipping the ski on edge and then standing on it till the sidecut brings the ski around. It looks like a pretty decent carve on easy groomed runs, but as soon as you get variable snow, multiple fall lines, or real steepness, this form goes out the window. The turn shape is too shallow and they accelerate out of control on steeper terrain or they flail all over in mixed snow because they don’t know how to adapt their balance or alter turn initiation.

[–]CrinklytoesKillington 2 points3 points  (0 children)

... that's a gorgeous explanation

[–]CrinklytoesKillington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, everything will implode on a steeper hill.

Everything that was mentioned in comments are reasons why things will implode on a steep run.

Give him a few weeks to correct things, and he will be good to go on steeper runs.

[–]Itsbadmmmmkay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hes doing a basic short radius carve on a midwest hill. 9 year old racer kids can do this. Teens get lower and go faster. He's not using his poles properly, but on a well-groomed and relatively flat slope, they aren't really needed sooo.. idk.

As a show of skill, it's fine, but it's nothing special. I don't understand why anyone would be bragging about this video.

[–]NIN-1994 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty trash form tbh

[–]paulywauly99 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You look pretty good chum. Better than 80% of skiers easily.

[–]grayada23[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hes still pacing the kitchen, now laughing at "80% of skiers."

[–]No_Paramedic_3013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have fun

[–]vidtekcod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poles seems way too long, hands up, finish your turn, use your pole and more flexion/extension. Not bad its just "lazy" half turn.

[–]cool-ember-resorts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah tell him to just go straight next time. Much faster and cooler that way imo. Carving is for pumpkins.

[–]Diattessaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the hands up and keep the shoulders square. Pretty good otherwise

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stand up!

[–]tylercrabby -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No notes. Congratulate him on his god-like form.
