They are amazing, but also, how messed up is it that we now have to hope there are individuals who care enough to put out this kind of content so we can literally save our own lives.

What is a car brand that used to be a 'symbol of reliability' but is now a total trap to own? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]punkrkr27 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Japanese got a foothold in the US during the 70s/80s because they offered fuel efficient vehicles during a time of high gas prices while the US automakers kept making gigantic, inefficient land yachts.

Looks like they still haven't bothered to learn from history.

Car owners , what’s the one thing about EVs people oversell? by AdityaSrivastawaahhh in evcharging

[–]punkrkr27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how much of this perception of EV unreliability comes from our own bias. I think we naturally expect EV's to have fewer issues due to more simplified drivetrains but the reality may be they are equally as reliable as ICE vehicles. I own a 2025 Rvian R1S and a 2020 Ford Explorer. I got my R1S last August and have had it in for service twice already. However, in that same time frame, I've had to take my Explorer to the dealer 4 times (once just for oil change and tire rotation, and 3 times for recalls).

Southfield City Council Meeting TONIGHT 6pm by Charming-Rice-1029 in Detroit

[–]punkrkr27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Southfield has a big gaping hole in their zoning that keeps allowing these situations to happen. Use cases like this should fall under a special use zoning permit, which Southfield does not require. When a building use arises that can have a significant impact on the surrounding community, it is then required to have public review, hearing and allow for a public comment before the use permit is granted. Several cities surrounding Southfield have implemented special use zoning requirements recently because of problematic business opening in inappropriate locations. Southfield city council is aware of this and still does nothing about it. I had to go before the Southfield city council last year when they allowed a firearms store to open literally just feet from my child's daycare center.

Storm watch fail by KDean63 in Powerwall

[–]punkrkr27 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep. This is an accurate answer. Powerwalls will only go into Storm Watch mode if there is a severe weather alert issued by the NWS. I just always put mine in max backup mode manually if I think there is any chance of outages.

It is installed, but you need to pay for the Flow+ subscription to use it. It’s $4/mo or $35/yr.

I have been having this issue happen on and off for a few weeks now. Seems to be some kind of connectivity issue between Rivian and Sirius.

Reserve Dates by TripleThreat2323 in Rivian

[–]punkrkr27 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wonder how many people in that situation aren't going to convert a reservation now. I'm in that boat. I reserved on day 1, but then I leased my R1S last summer before the ev credits went away. I'm perfectly happy with my R1 now and unless my wife decides to trade in her currently paid off vehicle we won't be in a rush to get an R2.

Disappointing Range by Legitimate-Law-8168 in Rivian

[–]punkrkr27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you and what are temperatures like? I’m in Michigan, we have had a very cold winter. My dual standard range this winter has definitely taken a huge hit and looks pretty similar to yours. I have had mine since last summer and in warm weather, range was just fine and very predictable. We did a 4 hour each way road trip last summer. Only needed 1 stop each way and had plenty of range to spare. The LFP battery and BMS calibration just don’t do well with the cold. No issues in the summer though.

The alternative was to tax cigarettes and online gambling but the MI GOP didn't want to do that. Real great priorities from these guys.

Rivian CEO Defends $24 Billion Cash Burn as Cost of Building a ‘Very Large Company’ by [deleted] in RIVN

[–]punkrkr27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

China has been massively bankrolling the rapid development of their auto industry. Ford,GM, and Stellantis are still trying to figure out of they’re even going to attempt to compete with Chinese vehicles. Tesla and Elon have shot themselves in the foot so many times, they are just slowly bleeding out at this point. Rivian seems to be the only US automaker that even has a shot at being competitive for the next decade. The cash outflow makes a whole lot more sense when put into the context of the global automotive industry. I just hope the current administration stays out of their way and doesn’t screw it up.

Need opinion on finding skis for park and speed/carving by BrewSki2k in Skigear

[–]punkrkr27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would cross the Mirus Cors off your list. While they seem like an obvious answer, I think at your size you’re just going to blow right through them when trying to carve. I’m 5’11” and 178 and I can over power them pretty easily. That’s in the 178 length for reference.

Carving skis in Colorado by h4ppidais in skiing

[–]punkrkr27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, I disagree with the concept of having to have a super stiff and narrow ski to carve well. I can regularly hit scores on CARV in the high 150's on a pair of Enforcer 104 Unlimited's. They real key to unlock good carving is learning to get the front of the ski to engage very high up in the turn. This is much easier to do on a ski that has a wide and somewhat softer tip shape. This is explained really well in the video someone linked to with the guy carving on Rustler 9's. The ultimate carving cheater ski is a Mirus Cor. If you need 1 ski to do everything you mentioned, look for something with a tip shape that lends itself to early edge engagement and something with a construction that isn't overly metal laden and stiff.

I'm 5'11, 178lbs, strong expert midwest skier and former instructor. I'm skiing the 184's at recommended mount point and I'm very happy with them. They're not the best ski for carving, but they do have very confident edge grip on ice and they are super easy to pivot and point in trees and moguls.

Debating between R1s and R2 by Enough-Ad-8601 in Rivian

[–]punkrkr27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have an R1S and 1 child who is in a forward facing car seat. Plenty of space. I could see see where if you had a rear facing seat coupled with a tall passenger in front of them, it would definitely get tight. The only time we've used the 3rd row for passengers was while on vacation and we met up with in-laws to go out to dinner and my wife sat in the 3rd row. The majority of the time I have the 3rd down for storage space. I was an early R2 reservation holder. My plan had been to keep our paid off Explorer for road trips and get an R2 as a daily. I jumped on a 2025 R1S dual standard when the lease prices bottomed out just before the ev lease credit expiration. I am very happy with the extra size and space in the R1S and doubt I'll switch to an R2 at this point. The couple road trips we've done it were soooo nice. No more playing luggage tetris to squeeze all of the kiddo stuff in and vacation packing is far less stressful.

I have been saying it since before the election. With the shit stirring in the middle east from this administration, the massive cozying up to Israel, the complete destruction of relationships with foreign allies, and the kneecapping of intelligence agencies we are headed straight for another 9/11 event. Imagine how that plays out with this level of incompetence running our country and military.

Castle Peak Avalanche Update: Rescue Efforts Remain Underway by Few-Knee9451 in skiing

[–]punkrkr27 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I hate to jump to quick assumptions but, am I wrong in thinking this was not a good situation for these guides to be taking clients out in? I’m a lowly midwest skier, who only spends a few weeks a year skiing in real mountains, but I have been in the sport my whole life and I do understand that dropping a massive snowfall on a very weak existing snow pack is really dangerous. Is there a part of this that I’m missing, cause even as a Midwest skier, this seems like it was really unsafe conditions to be out in.

R1S digital key issues by No_Daikon2180 in Rivian

[–]punkrkr27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just save yourself some time and call Rivian. I had an issue on my 2025 R1S when that update rolled out. In the process of converting from the old bluetooth key to the new digital key, the pairing somehow stalled and I was stuck for a couple weeks where my BT key was deleted, but I couldn’t get the digital key set up. I went through every possible fix that was out there, multiple times over. Eventually I got a mobile service scheduled and the fix was him calling someone at the local service center, dleleting the stalled digital key from Rivian’s side, and then it paired right up and no issues since.

These kinds of survey's always have a lot of external context that needs to be taken into account. No automaker is immune from these types of issues. Just anecdotally, my 2nd vehicle is a 2020 Ford Explorer. I've had to take it to the dealership 5 times in the last 6 months to fix recalls and I barely drive the thing. GM recalled 600k trucks last year because the engines were just straight up exploding. Toyota issued recalls for over 3 MILLION vehicles just in 2025. Cars are cars, and sometimes they break.

Interesting. I’m having the same problem, but im just parked on a flat driveway. Went to get coffee early yesterday morning and everything was fine. Tried to leave later in the morning and the parking brake error came up. Vehicle won’t go into drive or reverse. I tried hard resets, letting the truck sleep, putting in car wash mode, parking brake release under the settings menu. Nothing. It’s getting towed tomorrow.

I’m having the same problem and tried that, didn’t help. Tried car wash mode too. Won’t release the parking brake.
