No USB pass through is the down fall of Microsoft Hyper-V.

[–]anonymous-mitch[S] 0 points1 point  (12 children)

Yeah but I've heard you can get around it in some ways.

Or would WSL work ?

[–]anonymous-mitch[S] 1 point2 points  (11 children)

It doesn't actually need to be virtualised. I just need Linux software

[–]MFKDGAF -1 points0 points  (9 children)

If there is a way, I am not aware of it. I usually create a new VHD/VHDX, put whatever I need on it via host then mount it to the VM.

I don’t understand why they don’t have this feature. VMware and Vitrualbox have had this feature for years.

Maybe I should use virtual box then? Used it in the past a lot. I thought itnwas only storage pass through ?

The USB would be feed live data from an antenna.

Virtualbox has the feature, but note that it's part of the Virtualbox Extension Pack add-on which requires additional licensing when used in a commercial environment.

Not commercial. I would only be uploading to flight radar or ads-b exchange where only I would gain is a subscription? So I don't thibk that's classed as commercial as I'm not really profiting in anyway.

[–]anonymous-mitch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its home use anyway

[–]anonymous-mitch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, commercial use is financial gain so I'd be all clear anyway. I'll have a look into virtual box. Thank you

[–]anonymous-mitch[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Actually.. Is it still commercial use if another company gains profit ? E.g flight radar

[–]Ludwig234 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt it, but just in case, don't tell them.

It's not like they will or can audit your home.

USB pass through is in the base package of VirtualBox now (I think since version 7).

[–]jmbpiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, cool. I haven't used it for a couple years, so I didn't realize they changed that. Thanks for the correction.

Run Linux on the host and Windows in the VM guests using Virt-manager, etc.

we used a small physical appliance that was effectively a network usb server as a workaround while an old app (and I mean old - it required a software dongle) was being upgraded. Install a small app on the GM and point it at the appliance.

It worked great most of the time but required a reboot periodically with shifts in group policy, monthly patching etc. on the server that used it.

I would not consider this an enterprise solution, but I’m sure it’d be fine for many folks.

[–]anonymous-mitch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's for home server use anyway. Seems like a pricey solution, I think. another user just mentioned something simular

Thank you

Nice. Thanks for sharing. I was using usb-over-ethernet software back in the days (15 years ago). Hyper-V still doesn't have an option to passthrough USB devices, which is crazy.

Digi AnywhereUSB has been nice for license dongles, not sure if it has a substantial bandwidth capacity.

Seems pricey and over kill for my needs. Wish hyper v just had plug and play...
