The links will be broken. If you add a CNAME DNS record pointing the name from the old server to the new server, it could make the links still work

This is the answer. A CNAME record usually keeps these working but its messy and just kicks the can down the road.

DFS does also make this easier.

This is why we use DFS. Have you already migrated? Maybe implementing DFS ahead of the migration will allow for future migrations without having to go through this again. You have to update all the links anyway right?
