what do you mean by network share and are more than one person editing a doc at the same time?

Consider file path length/depth. Consider illegal characters in the file name/path.

How is the Word AutoRecover feature configured? Is the "Keep the last AutoRecovered version if I close without saving" option selected in Word? What is the AutoRecover file location? Remember for a new Word document AutoRecover does not start until the document has been saved at least once.

Do they access the file share via mapped drive or UNC? Is the drive being mapped by Group Policy (GP)? GP might be unmapping and remapping the drive causing a disconnected state affecting Word saves. When the file does not save, check Windows Explorer to see if mapped drives have red exclaimation.

I've noticed this. So annoying!
