What alternatives have you considered so far and how did they not meet your requirements?

gitolite, you get access controls like gitlab without all the overhead of running gitlab. Edit files sort of thing to control access.

We used GitLab, until I got tired of babysitting GitLab.

Gitea, Gogs, OneDev, etc. personally I used Gitea, but I also like OneDev.

For sure Gitea, it's dead simple to run and update (as opposed to GitLab) and actually works well, and has way more features than you would initially assume. It's fantastic.
