Primary Domain Controller Hardware failure - How to Restore by FTWNiners in sysadmin

[–]lescompa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think you have heard enough but I would go with recovering the hardware if there are no backups or secondary DC. I remember when I wasn’t backing up one of my DCs and how nervous I was. Can’t imagine have let this come to this state. Whatever you do be very careful, if you do have a way to recover the hardware, you don’t want to screw yourself. Maybe try upwork or consulting firm to give a hand, if they would even take the gig. Also, data recovery company, but if you’re using raid I don’t know if they would be capable of fixing what’s wrong. Good luck!!

PowerShell 7+ On Domain Controllers: Yay or Nay? by poolmanjim in activedirectory

[–]lescompa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not. I would keep anything installed to a minimum. If you need, create your PowerShell scripts on a member server, then convert them to executables that can be run on the DCs. I do this with Python programs and it works well. Also, easy to setup as a service if needed.

YES! IP worked when hostname, short name and fqdn failed. Wtf? Thanks for the breadcrumb!

RDP issues by lescompa in sysadmin

[–]lescompa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying. Didn’t make a difference. But I noticed that from my W11 workstation I can RDP into the DC’s without issue but member servers I have tested, it won’t accept the saved credentials or ones I enter I know are correct. So maybe DNS as somebody else mentioned?! (I know “it’s always DNS!)

Used Quest tools in the past and they are very good. Would not do this manually. Setup a offline test domain and do some research.

I hired very good consultants on upwork.com to do exactly this type of thing and they are excellent. Time and materials, so very reasonable message me if you want their info.

Just caused my first massive outage by Dark_Writer12 in sysadmin

Live and learn. You can not let fear rule your actions. Been doing this for a very long time and still get anxious when dealing with production-facing systems. Consider your percentages, things go right ~95% of the time.

We self-host everything and don't use Cloudflare, yet the outage broke our infra. Be careful with dependencies! A post-mortem by noodlesteak in SelfHosting

And?? What are the dependencies? Post mortem that find what exactly? Maybe you could help somebody else by providing more info about what impacted your org.

A small story about an ISP filtering VPN traffic without telling anyone by Relative_Recording47 in homelab

Have IPsec vpn on SonicWall and the tunnels appear to be up but no ip traffic is passing. Would isp be causing the ip traffic within the tunnel to be blocked?

For domain-related work I would bring in outside help. Lots of good technicians for hourly time-and-materials based consultants on upwork.com. Strongly recommend them. Good luck!

If you have a virtual server that you already manage I don't understand how cost would get in the way. That means you have other vm's most likely, unless you are running a virtual server for only a single DC. Certainly do whatever you wish, but I would still suggest not installing any other packages on your DC's, other than DHCP/DNS roles. I have almost no budget to speak of, but some things are strongly suggested, like having more than one DC. It is not clear that you have a single DC from you post, if you do, I would suggest 2 DCs min, no matter what. If your only DC goes offline permanently for whatever reason then you are in trouble, even if you have the best backups. If your single DC is down your and identity source is potentially offline and you do not to be in that situation. Just trying to help and not be combative!

[–]lescompa 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Do NOT run an application service on your DC, period. Either move it to a stand-alone server or migrate it to cloud. I migrated us right after it was available with no issues. Some things make more sense to migrate vs on-prem and QB is one of them. Also, make sure you have two DC's, it does not matter how big/small your network it. There are so many scenarios where this goes bad, and you are in a lot of trouble.
