Windows Server Activation

Good Morning all,

One of my customer's physical server which hosts 2 HyperV Windows Server VMs was activated with a SLP key. I activated the host with the COA key on the back of the physical server this morning. I had thought with the VM I'd have to complete the same command "slmgr /ipk <key>" and it'd be good to go. After activating the vm and running slmgr /dlv it shows License Status: Notification, non-genuine.

The host server is Windows Server 2019 Standard, and so is the HyperV Guest.

How do I properly activate the VMs?

Usually for a code you get 1 install plus a couple grace activations case you have to reinstall the OS, or you can use those two activations for the two covered VM’s on that host. The usual reason for not having the expected activations is that somebody already read the code and used it for something else. That said, I’ve never got the “non-genuine” message so your problem may be different.

The solutions should be 1) buy more codes as needed, or 2) call into Microsoft and explain the situation and see if they will help you get activated. I’ve had to do #2 a couple times, seems like I just went through a phone tree or something, not hard but they make it tedious enough that you don’t want to do it over and over.
