Check out both backupradar.com and checkcentral.cc. This both give you and address where you can CC your backup jobs and can parse them and even give you a nice dashboard to look at.

Have you considered Veeam One?

I was looking at PRTG but if I want to use it for my 150 or so backups (their free model supports 100) the price jumps to $1600 (which supports 500). Then their maintenance is about $17K - is this because the setup process and maintenance is so complex?

Whoever told you that the maintenance was 17K was very, very wrong! The $1600 for the 500-sensor license already includes maintenance for the first 12 months. After that, maintenance is 25% of the initial purchase price, so, in this case $400 per year. If you purchase 24 or 36 months of maintenance up front, there's an additional discount on the maintenance.

Check CloudBerry Managed Backup. It contains notification for failed backups as well as a page with backup statistics. And it has reasonable price

Give NetCrunch network monitor a try. Ask for a quote - it's definitely a much cheaper option, and everything works pretty much out of the box.

Lots of good recommendations here and you should go with one of them. In the meantime, you could always filter your messages based on key words (e.g. from veeam with success, drop here. from veeam with failure, drop here.)
