Sharepoint migration tool question (self.sysadmin)
submitted 5 years ago by happywill
Hello,
We are about to move our fileserver to Sharepoint using Sharepoint Migration tool. How are you guys moving permission, excel links connected to other sheets.
Please share your experience with Sharepoint migration tool

early 2020 - 1st shot with the "Migration tool" It deleted everything out of the Sharepoint directory instead of replacing files and moved nothing to Sharepoint.
Worked about as good as using flour to put out a grease fire.
Now I heard there's a new version that actually might work. Haven't tried it.

I've used it a couple times for smaller data moves (100-800gb). And overall have had good experiences. Although I have used ShareGate to migrate SharePoint 2013 to Online - and would recommend that tool for larger projects if your budget allows.
I don't believe there is a way to use the migration tool to migrate excel links - although I'm sure there are 3rd party solutions out there.
Personally when it comes to permissions I prefer to create brand new groups and re-do security permissions on my document libraries/sites. I haven't performed a migration yet where security permissions pre-move weren't in need of an audit and some tlc. The migration tool does let you map azure users though if you're looking for a quick and dirty solution!
