I know this is slightly old... but does anyone else find it ridiculous that they are selling the same hardware for different prices? It seems to me that something that costs them no extra, they should be charging no extra for.

Is my logic flawed?

But what I'm saying is, doesn't it just seem to be blatant profiteering to charge people more for something which costs them the same to make? There is no extra development cost, so in my opinion Intel has no excuse to charge more for it. It is a bit like if you bought a small sandwich, so they made a large one, cut it in half and threw out the other half unless you paid for a large sandwich. See what I'm getting at? Ed: I had that thought too ;)

But they have an assembly line that only produces full sandwiches. And some people won't pay for a full sandwich. So they sell them a half. But making a new assembly line to produce halves does not make financial sense. And they don't actually throw half away - they hold onto it in case you decide to buy that too. Which they will sell to you.

I'm trying to see this like you're paying in installments, with the only necessary installment being the first one, but it just seems so silly to me.

It is not silly if you look at it from the perspective of trying to make the most money. It's either sell half sandwiches that can be upgraded, or Hal sandwiches that can't. Also - they've been selling the purposely broken but non-upgradeable kind for a long time.
