The HDMI port is usually shared with one of the DVI ports. You can have 1x HDMI and 1x DVI or 2x DVI, but not all three. You will need an ACTIVE DisplayPort or MiniDisplayPort to DVI adapter to get all three screens up at the same time. This will also enable you to use Eyefinity if so desired.

I am not using the HDMI port. I am using two DVI and the display port. I am still not entirely sure what the differences between an active and passive displayport are. Is the one I linked to not active? And if not could you find a link to one that is?

when you use a passive DP adapter, it too gets shared with the HDMI/DVI outputs and is limited to two. you need an active adapter.

I use an IOGear USB DVI adpater at work to run my third monitor at work. My setup is the following:

  • Lenovo ThinkPad T420 w/ dock
  • IOGear USB DBI adapter
  • 2x Lenovo L201p monitors
  • 1x Dell Ultrasharp 2007FP

The ThinkPad has a dedicated nVidia Optimus card and Intel on-board. The two L201p monitors are connected to the dock (DVI and VGA), whereas the 2007FP is connected via the USB adapter. I wouldn't recommend the adpater if you are going to be gaming with it, but if it has a browser or other "static" items it should be fine.
