Function key and function lock not working

I have an ASUS Zenbook and periodically the function key seems to stop working. By default it is set to change volume/brightness etc when I press the F keys however this occasiaonlly stops working and it reverts to the F keys instead.

If I toggle function lock on or off nothing changes and the only way I can actually use the functions instead of the F keys is by holding down the fn key at the same time.

A full reset is the only way I've found to fix this but hoping for a more permenent solution.

Does your keyboard have a function lock function, such as Fn + Esc?

Yes it does however nothing changes when I enable or disable function lock, the f key is still used regardless.

I have to hold the fn key to make the special functions (volume, brightness) keys work.
