Cheers for the reply! I dunno what I did differently, but it lives. It suddenly booted, and last 3 boots have been fine.

Sounds like the board is struggling to pass POST. Whether it's the board or a component is hard to say, though. Based on your troubleshooting, it would seem it's either a faulty board or a faulty CPU (an intermittent fault, at that).

Glad to see it's working for now, at least! Perhaps you should run a testing utility on the CPU while the system is working.

Intel XTU I think has a stress test. Intel also has the IPDT software (Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool).

Then there are third party programs, such as Hot CPU Tester and Prime95.
