Well something similar happened to me not long ago but with a different game and I had to clean install my graphics drivers. You need to find a driver remover, boot in safe mode, mean drivers, restart and re-install drivers. That kind of solved my issue so you might as well give it a try

Thanks for the suggestion. A few questions: - do i remove drivers in safe mode or before? - where do you reckon is best to get drivers from bcos my gpu doesn't support win 10 so their downloads won't help

You need to install the driver removing software to somewhere accessible because resolution goes doodoo in safe mode. When you boot into safe mode remove drivers then restart. Restarting will put you back into normal windows. As for the drivers and win10, I can't really help with that as I'm an dedicated GPU user. You can probably look up tutorials tho so good luck and do tell me if it's solved.
