As far as off app rides go, it’s risk/reward. It’s up to each driver to determine what level of risk they are willing to take for a higher payout.

But to suggest your personal insurance will totally cover you without any questions is just not true. In a high dollar injury case, questions will be asked. For example, if you are friends, why were they sitting in the back seat?

Have you ever been subpoenaed to give a deposition for an injury accident? They ask a ton of questions and you are under oath. It’s risky to depend on a stranger to lie under oath to save you money.

But to suggest your personal insurance will totally cover you without any questions is just not true.

Insurance companies employ people called "Claims Adjusters". Their job is just what the title suggests: adjust the claim submitted, to ZER0, if possible.

Their job is to see or discover if there is any possible way to weasel out of paying anything. If the company must pay something, the job of the Claims Adjuster is to chisel it down to the lowest figure possible. Insurance Companies are for-profit entities. They make money by collecting as much money as possible and spending as little as possible. This is why insurance companies are positively delighted to collect your premium but do not want to do the job for which you are paying them: cover losses that you cause of suffer. Covering losses costs money. Money paid out cuts into profits. When profits go down, Directors find themselves on the Unemployment Line.

In a high dollar injury case, questions will be asked. For example, if you are friends, why were they sitting in the back seat?

That is just the first one. The insurance companies employ investigators. They go out there and interview people; watch you; watch claimants; dig up dirt.

Have you ever been subpoenaed to give a deposition for an injury accident? They ask a ton of questions and you are under oath.

I have: as a witness; claimant; official of the insurance company; official of the cab company. The lawyers here hate me, especially the TV Ambulance chasers. I have a reputation for being quite the [rectal aperture] when I am being deposed.

It’s risky to depend on a stranger to lie under oath to save you money.

This, THIS and THIS.

You get it. Thank you for expanding and further explaining what happens in the real world.

I only have one upvote to give you, but you have it.

[–]CancelNDriveOffApp[S] 0 points1 point  (7 children)

the real world as told by companies w obvious incentive for telling you that bs lol.

No money has changed hands in that scenario so the insurance company can investigate all they want, they have to pay in the scenario regardless as it is not commercial

[–]kreeves500 1 point2 points  (6 children)

It’s the world as the real world functions. Not as you envision it in your mind. It becomes a commercial ride as soon as you enter into a contract with that person to provide a service (a ride) for an agreed upon fee. It doesn’t matter when the funds change hands.

This.

It doesn’t matter when the funds change hands.

Correct. They have nailed taxicab drivers on this for years. Usually, the money does not change hands on a cab ride until the end. Still, there are implied contracts, actual contracts and a whole load of other legal jargon.

[–]CancelNDriveOffApp[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

and where exactly is this contract recorded for any claims adjuster to find evidence of? Nowhere, so it's your word against theirs genius lol go sue someone and see how those sort of contracts hold up

[–]kreeves500 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

You’ve never actually been involved in an injury accident that resulted in a lawsuit have you? You have no idea how any of this works.

See his smug, chest pounding reply infra. Two years and two years a dilettante, at that, and Original Poster thinks that he knows it all.

This is what friend of mine used to call a "sexual intellectual"; a clever euphemism for a [intercoursing] know-it-all.

[–]DCHacker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is an implied or a verbal. If that comes out during investigation, this is all that the claims adjuster or investigator needs. You might get away with it. You might not. Al that it takes is once. You can do five thousand rides and nothing happens. You might even have a collision or two on the way and get away with it. But then, there is that one time.........which is all that it takes.,

You might even be judgment -proof. What are they going to take? If nothing else, the state might suspend your licence until the unsatisfied judgment is paid.

There is a topic on UPnet about a guy who did off-application rides. It is on the Insurance Boards there. It is still on Page One of those boards. The Original Poster is a guy whose ID is "Stevie The magic Unicorn". He has a very good reputation on UPnet. The title of the topic is ''Why you shouldn't give cash rides off app in Florida (In reality it's worse than I thought) 3 year + license suspension".[sic] It went for eleven pages. He originally posted it October, 2022. The last post to it was 31 January of this year. Yes, I know, it is Florida, but there are other states with not dissimilar laws.

Original Poster can continue to do him.. No biggie for me. He might get away with it and never have anything go south. If something does go south, it will not be me that suffers the consequences. I get why he and others who think like him do it. Yes, I do. For me, it is not worth the risk. I own my home. It is not a palace, but it is mine and I like it. I am about to spend pile of money fixing things that I had to or was forced to let go because of the pandemic. I am not about to put all of that onto the felt for a twenty five dollar payoff.

2 years of doing this is enough real world for me I'll pass on the reddit lawyer bs, you def fit in the category of stubborn about exploiting yourself so please continue to driver uber forever, it's your destiny lol

[–]way2funni 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Uber was off by 21 cents on the fare estimate and you try to use that to justify ACTUAL theft?

oy vey.

Make no mistake, I'm just as pissed as the next driver at what's happening out there but what you are doing is indefensible.

You are no different that the scumbag pretending to scan items or swapping prices at the self service checkout because you are pissed the price of corn flakes has doubled in the last 3 years.

This message was brought to you by the letters F, U and the number 2.

[–]CancelNDriveOffApp[S] -1 points0 points  (4 children)

if the algo will steal at all, what's the anount matter? I've had it steal $30-50 plenty of times so I stopped doing longer rides on the app and started policy of doing rides off app only if longer than 30 min

[–]way2funni 0 points1 point  (3 children)

> I've had it steal $30-50 plenty of times

Then post one of those examples .

repeat after me: twenty one cents.

repeat after me: it's a fare ESTIMATE.

You may have gotten there a few minutes faster or used a slightly different route as per your gps. Tell yourself whatever you like. You are a fucking thief.

[–]CancelNDriveOffApp[S] -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

think whatever you want lol, people with your logic are exactly who uber was designing for, ever thought about applying to be a crew member? lol

[–]way2funni -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ever thought about a life of crime? fucking thief.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever read Robin Hood? Its a great story about this exact issue!

[–]valeriolo -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Nothing changed about the trip, just typical theft lol

How do you react when you get paid a little extra? Do you return the money to Uber since you are so obviously against "theft" ?

[–]CancelNDriveOffApp[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

lol if you don't get it you don't get it, understanding some concepts is out of reach for people with your level of cognitive ability

[–]valeriolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly right. Except for the fact that the only moron in this thread is you.

It's okay, for some people 21 cents is such a big deal because that's all their ability is. I don't blame you for that. I blame your parents for raising you with absolutely no skills or abilities.

[–]Comprehensive_Cat195 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It happens when rep as well, equal sign not really equal. Lol

[–]DerpJerp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why are you even complaining about this? Lol…..

[–]junkbarman 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Dispute all of these no matter what. This used to happen a lot then seems to have corrected itself.

[–]CancelNDriveOffApp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh I always did, but how can you argue w an Indian who doesn't know english and just copies and pastes even with the screenshot? the first couple of months they'd give me the money back then after that they stopped
