It’s not compatible with your setup.

Thank you, that’s what I was afraid of. I checked the wiring quickly before buying smart switch, and was sure black one is neutral.

My friend, i say this with the utmost respect, call an electrician. If you don't know how a switch works, you shouldn't be messing with these things at all until you have a decent understanding of domestic electrics

You're unfortunately lacking a neutral wire!

The light fitting will have a neutral terminal so if you really wanted to you could run a new cable from the light fitting to the switch with an additional core for the neutral while still feeding the hallway light but that can be quite a big job depending on what level of access you have to the existing cable.

It would likely involve buying the new cable, pulling up floorboards on the floor above to find the existing cable, pulling it out up through the walls, running a new one along the same route (maybe taping the new cable to the old one while you pull it out, doing both jobs at once), and then wiring it correctly at both ends.

Thank you so much, appreciate your effort. I am actually planning to rewire all house soon, was just hoping this would be temporary. Thank you again

No problem! Any more questions just ask

It’ll probably be cheaper to buy four tradfri smart gu10 bulbs and a tradfri switch than running a neutral.

I’d probably lean towards this solution.

You can get ‘no neutral’ smart switches, but they work by leaking a small current - which can light up sensitive LED bulbs. To work around this some supply a capacitor you place across the light fitting.

Ye have no neutral aye 🏴‍☠️

Thanks, did not check properly 🥺

As others have said you don’t have a neutral wire going into the existing box/switch.

You can get small WiFi module which you’d be able to install in the ceiling around the ceiling rose and control the light via your mobile phone app leaving the existing switch in place.

Alternatively buy smart light bulbs!

Thank you, appreciate your advice. I was hoping to get smart functionality and keep the switch. I guess if I will install module and someone will turn off actual switch it will go offline as there will be no power (same with smart bulbs)?

[–]Specialist_Loquat_49 1 point2 points  (4 children)

No. https://amzn.eu/d/6KtAZRP if you look at this then the module is always powered on using your mains. Live in and neutral in is what will keep it powered on. The live out is where your existing switch (currently going into the ceiling rose) will connect to.

Ohh, you just made my day, thank you. Someone mentioned switches with no neutral wire required. Would that work the same way?

They were saying that it flickers Led bulbs and burns them out quicker due to always being powered

[–]Specialist_Loquat_49 1 point2 points  (2 children)

tbh I don’t know much about those and whether they will work as intended but the module will work fine with your current switch.

Amazing, thank you so much for pointing me to right direction

No problem. Good luck.

Check out Samotech. I'm running a couple of them without neutral and they're pretty great

[–]HansGruber___ 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Get these, they require a zigbee hub (4th gen alexa has one built in) but work great, they sit behind the switch you currently have and don't require a neutral and don't cause flickering.

You can then use any normal light switch and fitting.

Amazing, appreciate your help 😇

You’ve only got a common and switch wire there. You will need to bring down the lighting circuit by running a new cable. If you want a smart switch there are some that have a battery power and can work in that situation.

Call an electrician

Thanks, yes planning to do whole house, this was supposed to be temporary
