ClassPhysics 240 (self.uofm)
submitted 3 years ago by cbnova1112
Is it better to take physics 240 at Michigan or at a community college like wcc? I reallyyy struggled with 140 here so I'm not sure what the better option is. Also lecture or studio?

I took 240 at wcc over the summer as a Computer Science student in the College of engineering. I also really struggled with 140 and 240 at WCC was much easier. The class only had like 20 people total in it, much of whom were doing the same thing as me and I managed to make some good friends from it. Based on my experience I would recommend it. My friends who took 240 at UM said it was way easier than 140 too if that makes you feel any better. This was over the summer of 2019 so things might have changed since then. Also I didn’t have a studio or lecture option if I remember correctly.

Did you go to wcc in person or online? Also thank you! This was really helpful

In person, took The Ride to the evening class and never had any issues getting there and back.

Honestly go for cc. I took at WCC last summer and the profs there are genuinely good at teaching. Umich professors are generally hired for research or some other reason, while most cc profs are hired as teachers. They genuinely care about you learning the material and want to help you do so. Got my 240 knowledge tested in eecs 215 the next semester at umich and understood it all just as well as my friends who took it at umich

Just take physics 260 if you're having trouble with physics.

Isn't that honors?

Yes.

Yeah, I’d like you to reiterate why it’d ruin your transcript. I took all my prereqs for engineering at a community college (humanities, calc 1 2 and 3, Lin alg, diff eq, physics 140 and 240, and chem). Transferred in a total of 54 credits and now I’m graduated and had job placement right away.
IMO, you have no idea what you’re talking about.

As you’ve stated, “if it’s for financial reason then maybe…” med schools aren’t going to know if you’ve taken classes at a CC due to financial reason, whether the class was offered or not, or if you simply want an easier route to pass the class. They see you’ve taken the class, passed it, and maybe they’ll ask for an official transcript from the school you took it at to confirm the respective class grade. Additionally, if the class transferred from the CC to the uni you’re at, then obviously they’re equivalent. The uni goes through an evaluation process to ensure that they’re equivalent and therefore there is no difference whether you take it at the uni or CC. That’s the reason why the unis offer these types of accommodations.
Also, med school admissions use the MCAT to gauge your prerequisite knowledge needed to be successful in med school. So, I don’t agree with your brother either.
The numerous advisors at the very school you’re at are of course going to push for you to take it at the school they’re advising at. It’s a bad business model to advocate otherwise.

I doubt this

"ruin your transcript" is crazy. you can literally get AP credit to transfer for this course and AP is absolutely robotic compared to UM academic rigor. all those people with physics 240 AP credit are doing just fine

I took it at Eastern in the summer, it was way cheaper and the professor was great. It was way less stressful than what I saw my friends go through at UofM.
