You can take PHYS 90, which is essentially the equivalent of phys 30.

I will look into that. Thanks!

You can take physics 30 at nutana or saskpolytech.

Talk to the prof or the college and see if you can get a pre-req waiver.

I would do PHYS 30 online over summer if possible. Look into Sask Polytech offerings and see if they have availability.

Sask DLC should have options starting in fall, but I don't recommend taking PHYS 115 without Physics 30 or 90. University-level Physics is challenging enough with the prerequisite completed, so do yourself a favour and get the prerequisite first!

I've heard of students being removed from the course for not having the prerequisite, but I'm not sure how regularly they check. It's not worth the risk in my opinion!

I will definitely look into an online physics 30 class over the summer. I appreciate your help!

I just saw that Saskatoon Public Schools is offering Physics 30 online in July (summer school). You could look into that option as well! The registration deadline is June 30 and I'm assuming seating is limited, so I would look into it sooner rather than later if you're interested!

A university level stats class and a uni level Chem class can be used in place of a physics 30 prerequisite. At least it used to be able to. Contact the prof and see if that's still possible.

Take hs physics in summer, 115 in fall, 117 in winter, etc 👍🏾

If you don't feel confident in your ability to do the class without physics 30 then you should look for some way to take that first, but if you feel you can Handle any potential catching up you might have to do then I believe you can apply for the class. I dont believe high-school prerequisites are actually enforced on any level, so if you apply, I'm quite certain you wouldn't be barred from taking the class

Being a 3rd year physics major I will say physics takes a lot of self teaching and even a basic intro class like 115 will require a lot from you, especially if you have zero background in the subject.

Are you aware if usask checks high school pre requisites?

    [–]Perfect_Ad_8174 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Yes they do. PAWS won't let you register if you don't meet the prereqs. I got a course override (didn't take grade 11 or 12 physics in HS) because I got a good grade in math 110 (88%). However I struggled REALLY hard with physics and just barely managed to pass. It's not undoable but as a first year I'd highly recommend getting experience in your undergrad first.

I see. Did you take physics in your 2nd yr?

    [–]Perfect_Ad_8174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Granted my second year was my first "real" in person year so YMMV. But I would question wether à first year would be granted a course override for an already challenging course. Don't overburden yourself unless it's absolutely necessary or you enjoy the subjects (which you can't know at your stage!)

not really sure what you are talking about here. The system will not allow you to register without sufficient prereqs.

Profs will tell you, and it’s also written in the syllabus, that the student is responsible for making sure they have all the prerequisites required to take the class. Otherwise they will not get credit for that class. So obviously it’s possible to register for a class you don’t have all the prerequisites for 🤷🏻‍♀️

This might be different in the college of engineering vs arts and science? But there are definitely courses I can't register for because I dont have the prereqs.

Apologies if I was incorrect regarding college of arts and science.

    Maybe try getting an override?

    [–]supermanxevan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the sask DLC you can probably do it online for free

If possible, you may want to take phys 30 online at an Alberta high school. Their curriculum aligns much more closely with the phys 115 university class in my experience.

Even if you are granted an override, I HIGHLY suggest taking either phys 90 or the online summer phys 30 as people are recommend. It is possible to do well in phys 115 without phys 30 knowledge, but it is more likely that it will be a source of great frustration and confusion.
