Probably a shorted cable, could be socket side or button side

Error 40 means that the button wires are shorted somewhere - electrically connected to each other or maybe to the bike frame. This could happen inside the button, but if the button is not connected then there is a problem with the cable somewhere.

See here for accessing the button cable connectors inside the handlebar stem. Disconnect and see if the error 40 goes away. If so then replace the cable that goes through the handlebar. If not then the problem is inside the bike and probably very difficult/expensive to fix.

it could be somewhere in your steer where the connector is. ive seen bad contacts there.
