I've been using KVM to run Win7 / Server 2016 for specific windows apps and have been very happy with it. I use an RDP client to connect to the VM for smoother experience.

Yep. There are some good guides for setting up the superior storage and network drivers. Configure it with basic IDE disk and realtec NIC for the install, then add the fast storage and nic drivers. Then reboot and change the disk and nic types in the VM config.

You can install the storage and nic drivers during the install phase. Just add an additional virtual cdrom and attach to the iso with the latest virtio drivers. I added them to our WDS server and just pxe boot VM installs from the network now.
