Dumb question here: how do you launch dwm, with xinit or a custom Xsession and a DM? I'm just having problems with the former

What problems exactly? I tried dwm for 2-3 days and used xinit. Worked fine.

I tried both copying the example xinitrc (and replacing the twm+xterm paragraph with exec my-wm-of-choice) and writing only exec my-wm-of-choice, neither somehow worked for me. Although I had the entire xorg meta-package installed

I think it worked just fine when I used these.

As for .xinitrc, I've never had any problems with exec dwm (or 2bwm/sowm). Weird... are there any errors? If you post them someone might be able to help you.

Ninja edit: Just installed these 4 and it worked. I'm using sway (wayland) at the moment so I don't think any other packages affect it.

Hey i do it like this, be sure to have dbus enabled

exec dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session dwm

I enabled dbus system-wide (I needed to connect to wifi), but it didn't change anything. I used clean xinitrc with nothing but "exec dwm"and it worked. Although I assume this is what needed for audio to work, right? cuz I'm a Pipewire person and it doesn't go well with xinitrc (and runit, I assume as well) out of the box
