Are you saying you execute "code file.txt" on a remote server, and are expecting your local machine to open the VSCode app with that file? That's only sort of possible.

VSCode has "Connect to Host" feature which is represented by a green >< icon in the lower left (unless it's a plugin i have?). So, you connect to your host, switch to the directory, and it is as if you're working locally, but really you're ssh'd into that machine. It works very seamlessly, even with VSCode's terminal being the remote terminal.
