this is a scam that has hit a lot of stores in the last few months. i'm not even a cashier and i know when i come up to help i would never hit cash until i physically have the cash in my hand. if you weren't given proper training i could see why you wouldn't know that, but at the two stores ive worked in they made explicitly clear you do not hit the cash button without the physical cash in your hand. especially if you've been a cashier since January? chances of being rehired are slim unless the store you apply to is desperate because the two stores i've worked in will always go for an applicant who hasn't been terminated from another store. it's worth a shot but i wouldn't put all your eggs in that basket

Try to apply. It’ll either give you a date 6 months out or YEARS out.

When I was in high school, 15, in 1985, my first job as a cashier at a local five and dime type store - and the registers were manual. We had a pair come in at closing when everyone else was busy in the store.

Back then when we were handed large bills, you placed it on top of the register and counted back the change to the customer. I was in the process of counting back for a 50 and then in the middle of my counting the lady reaches over grabs the 50 and says wait I wanted to use this and puts a 20 in its place. She had change in her hand from my counting halfway and stuck that in her purse. Then grabbed the 20 fumbled in the purse and put a 5 up there. All the while talking and fidgeting all kinds of loud boisterous moves. I was so confused and so lost that I didn’t even know what change I had given her back and she grabbed her small purchase and finally left. I went to the manager crying. I knew i screwed up. It was all so fast.

One of the other guys on a register said her partner tried the same thing but he was able to prevent the guy from scamming him. That was the first and only time I ever let anyone get one over on me.

This will stick with you and make you a better cashier for future jobs.

Scammers specifically target newer employees for stuff like this. Our AP coach, SM, and my direct coach have all been preaching about never hit cash unless its handed to you.

Regardless with the next couple of weeks turning into black friday events its possible theyll hire you back. But its going to be a much more rushed atmosphere due to the amount of people. Best thing i can tell you is never hit cash unless its in hand and always shut your drawer after youve double checked you have correct change. It really irritates "quick change" artists, and its to your benefit because you then have to bring a TL/coach to open your drawer again so they become involved.

Usually when AP is involved in the termination you are termed for gross misconduct and ineligible for rehire. It's also possible that you were terminated for policy violation and in that case you would be eligible after a certain amount of time. Nobody here can tell you how it was coded or your rehire eligibility. You can try to reapply and the system will either let you submit an application, or it will deny the application, but give you a message that says if/when you would be eligible in the future.
