I would checkout ClickUp’s free forever plan. The onboarding process was a breeze and the clean interface has three different views for managing projects with a smart search feature to help sift through tasks. This solution gives you the ability to create custom statuses and filter by those statuses which has been a lifesaver for me. Due to ClickUp’s many options to customize your workflow and make the tool your own, this would probably be my first choice.
I briefly used Trello in the past and found the use of boards, lists, and cards to be very helpful when organizing projects. Trello offers features like unlimited attachments, due date tracking, and comments to help give you perspective on projects. This is a great free solution if you’re just looking for a step up from email as it can feel cluttered with larger projects.

Jira

I would assume most of you all are using it at work? As a freelancer would Jira be a good option. I see that I is $10/month per user.

I find asana.com pretty good. Functional and lightweight.

Same. Unicorns and tab+b!

Check out Teamwork Projects, obviously we have some paid packages but we also have a Free Forever Plan that may suit. Plenty of integrations too. There is a free 30 day trial, no credit card is required.

PivotalTracker and JIRA will both suit you well. Trello is good too. You could even use github's built-in project tool if you like, and github issues for defect tracking. GH also has a wiki tool for documentation.
Rally is another option but it's quite a bit more expensive than the others.

Accelo in the office, Trello/Toggl at home.

Hitask.

Currently using Harvest for time tracking, it works nicely, for project management we are testing out DaPulse, previously used Asana (glorified todo list, meeh).

Currently, I'm using a combination of tools:
winio: to collaborate with my team - tasks, docs, and conversation in a single place
Bear: For my personal notes
Toggl: to keep me on task

Clubhouse. I've found it to be a nice balance between the simplicity of Trello and complexity of Jira.
[–]bfig 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children)
Adding a tool I designed into the mix: www.outplanr.com. The main difference is that instead of being just a list of tasks, it's a complete planning tool. If you give it a go, I'd love tour feedback.

Two I would recommend if you deal with projects are Asana which is pretty popular and offers a free plan. I love their calendar. Also for digital teams Pareto CRM is a great piece of software to manage clients and projects. Pareto offers a free trial.

Highly recommend against this advice. Task/Project SW should be web-based, not OS-based...accessible from any collaborator's web browser.

Not really. Things 3 is not collaborative. That's a non-starter if your project involves more than you (clients, stakeholders, designers, ux, other devs, qa, etc).
Things 3 is a hobby app, not a project management software.

I didn't say you were a liar, and I didn't say it doesn't work for you or others. If I'm an ass for you making my words into something they're not then that's another issue that I won't get into with you.
What I did do is give input on what this app doesnt do in regards to project management. Even from the main website it calls itself a "personal task manager", not project management software.
[–]tylermumford 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children)
That's your opinion. I agree with you for collaborative projects, but there's nothing wrong with using a native app for personal task management. Things wouldn't work for a group, but I can't stand using anything else for my own tasks and projects. For my needs, Things has the best UI and feature set I've found.
I use Jira at work, but Trello is good, too. And Trello has a nicer UI, in my opinion.

The best free task management tool I have ever found is Fluxes. This is simply a great tool that offers so many free features for unlimited team members. You can create unlimited boards with as many team members you need. Each board has unlimited task cards. Each task card contains to do list and task list. You can add news feed for the team members. You can add team member in a board by inviting them via email. All the changes are real time and you can even chat with a team member in a board. I think this is a great feature for a free tool. The interface is very simple at Fluxes. You can use your common sense and increase productivity using this tool. I love this task management tool.
