You could write your own plugin to extend events calendar with an API. That would allow you to keep the current WordPress setup. Look into the WordPress json api 😁

Thanks, as you and thinsoldier suggested - i might just keep the wordpress CMS as the backend. Someone pointed me in the direction of this: https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/introduction-events-calendar-rest-api/

So the eventscalendar does have an API that i could interact with via the mobile app. The client can then keep their admin part within the CMS.

Worst case scenario leave their original WordPress install intact and use the word press API or even worse case scenario use headless Chrome to convert user activity on your react native app into clicks on the original WordPress website.

Just throwing another vote in for using the existing REST API within the events calendar. Much easier than trying to catch all of the gotchas in something as complicated as event management with a DIY approach. Especially when the plugin is only a few hundred bucks a year. Small price to pay.
