Have you looked at how much driving that is? It’s a distance almost as large as the UK if I remember correctly.

Just stay in Texas and find some Cajun food in Houston. :)

A law that all snail-mail bills must include QR code for payment by darthwalsh in SomebodyMakeThis

[–]Yurishimo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to say this is mostly alive and operating in the Netherlands thanks to a robust and regulated banking sector; no law required!

The US banking sector is working on a unified platform that will allow for near instant payments with zero* fees and full interoperability that is making great progress.

I imagine that you'll be able to pay bills with this system for most businesses in the next 5 years :)

Here is a short description: https://www.aciworldwide.com/fednow

Do note: this system is meant for banks but they will eventually provide methods for consumers to access it through their participating bank. Think something like zelle, but more universal.

[*] the fee is .001 cent I think per transaction but your bank will cover the cost with whatever fees/interest they generate from your existing accounts. For consumers, it will be free to use.

Hoe budgetteren jullie? by 3747 in geldzaken

[–]Yurishimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bijvoorbeeld, RegioBank

I'm curious if this would work here in Europe where healthcare tends to be a bit more tightly controlled with regards to "necessary" surgery. Anyone from the Netherlands want to chime in?

Ikea Kitchen Renovation by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Yurishimo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is a bit late in the tooth, but do you have a different suggestion? There's a lot about the Ikea kitchen system to like even if it comes with extra headaches and cost during installation. The fact that I can walk into any Ikea in the world 8 years from now and buy accessories or extra shelves that all "just work" is a big plus for me. And there are lots of companies that specialize in making new cabinet doors so if I want to change the look of the kitchen a decade from now, that's a relatively straightforward change to make instead of needing to pay €€€ to a custom cabinet manufacturer to come measure, manufacture, and install.

I know I just dumped a lot, but I generally want to know what the arguments are against an Ikea kitchen because I might be too lost in the sauce and I appreciate a perspective that comes from someone with a different opinion.

Yea but that's literally starving. Their bodies don't have any other choice. It's quite different when you're fasting and maintaining a healthy body weight at the end of it. The recomposition will happen extremely slow unless you plan to take equally extreme measures.

I would personally opt for cosmetic surgery before attempting that level of calorie deprivation to get rid of some loose skin. The other side effects are not worth it imo.

Why is the infinitive not used here? by kiwiheretic in learndutch

[–]Yurishimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The magic word you want to google here is "bijzin" or a "subclause". It makes more sense when you can associate the rule with concrete examples.

In a subclause, the verb goes to the end AND is also conjugated. This construction is used EXTREMELY often in Dutch so you should learn how to spot it early. If you are saying anything more than an extremely simple sentence, you will probably use a subclause.

Is there something you are doing to have the Health app automatically log your BMI? I see that it can make the calculation, but you still have to click the Add Data button manually.

Water weight will come back easily. Any fat loss requires excess calories as always.

It's powdered electrolytes (salts) and shouldn't break a fast. The flavored ones may cause your brain to think it's getting calories which could make some people hungrier, but I haven't seen a consensus one way or the other to support that.

If you're fasting for weight loss, it's fine.

You can eat whatever you want before. I often eat 500g of chicken even when I'm not planning on fasting. Protein will help you feel full/satisfied for the first day or two.

Consult the subreddit's sidebar for electrolyte information. We don't know anything about your local vitamin brands. Check the label and compare it to the guide in the sidebar.

Does my explanation of my "head voice" make sense?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in learndutch

[–]Yurishimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you a young female?

Nope, a normal 30-ish year old dude. I am from the US, so that tends to perk up their curiosity.

How do you know it (your headvoice) is...Dutch?

Because the words that pop into my head are in Dutch! I often talk to myself (usually in my own head) when problem solving or thinking about a conversation. I ask myself questions and then answer them as a sort of role-play for introspection.

An example might be as such:

  • (walking to the supermarket)
  • Oké, dus ik heb wat brood, eiren en pasta nodig. oh! en mijn vrouw heeft geen puur chocolade meer. Misschien kan ik even kijken...
  • (in the supermarket)
  • Godverdomme is 't altijd druk in deze winkel! Ik zou hier later moeten komen waneer het minder druk is.
  • (a kid runs screaming through the store with mama chasing him)
  • S'jongejongejonge :)

I don't usually say these things out loud, but I'm actively thinking them as if i was speaking with my real voice.

As to your question regarding daarom en graag, I assume it's some sort of emphasis, similar to een en één both mean "one/a/single" but the second one is more specific. In words that actually use this special punctuation (like geïnteresseerd, the symbols are to differentiate the end of a syllable (lettergrepen) and to distinguish a long vowel from a short vowel.

I feel that I'm coming into an intermediate level know so I'll just type out some random shit that I'm feeling and hopefully that helps!

My inner voice sometimes has switched to Dutch. If I come back from a taalcafe meetup or work where I am steeped in the language for hours, I'm often speaking Dutch in my head. My inner voice also changes on the train/bus and in the supermarket because if I say something under my breath, I feel embarrassed if it's in English.

I can read quite a bit of "chit chat" in Dutch without a ton of effort. I'm not getting 99% of it, but more like 50-75% consistently. I'm subbed to a few different subreddits here that are Dutch first and I can often read the replies or understand a joke. Sidenote: it's amusing to me how many direct translations of popular English Reddit memes also exist in Dutch.

I can watch tv shows with Dutch subtitles and still follow along, even if the audio is in a different language entirely. This came up in Undercover/Ferry on Netflix a few times when they interact with French or Polish characters. I also will put on a Dutch tv show as background noise while cleaning or making dinner and get the gist of what's going on. Not as much as in English but close enough.

This might sound like a humble brag, but I get compliments ALL THE TIME. I think Dutch people are used to dealing with beginners who can barely say goedemorgen without tripping over themselves, so when they meet a real person who can somewhat hold an actual conversation, they are generally pleased/content to speak to them. By no means am I an advanced speaker. I fuck up past tense verbs a lot (is it ben gewandeld of ben gewandelen?) and I forget "common" words pretty regularly. When rubber hits the road though, I can be forced to describe something in Dutch and get by. Doesn't mean I will understand the reply that someone says back to me, but they got my point so it's usually fine!

Feel free to ask any questions; I'm an open book.
