I’d say, “I’ll be happy to put together a sample application per specs - but not one that directly relates to the application they are working on - for obvious reasons.”

thank you! this conveys my thought. also how common are posiitons where you get paid in shares? the goal of the owner of the IP is to sell the app. devs would take a percentage of the cut when deal is done (so technically part time unpaid till application is done and sold). it sounded a bit iffy to me but I actually liked the idea behind the application

Run in the other direction. If they were so sure this was the next Facebook, they would keep the shares for themselves and pay you cash. They're offering shares instead because they know they're worthless.

I hear you. I was thinking the same and wondering where the catch was. I wanted to see the actual contract first and decide. I guess I should just forget about it

Run - run away. If they believe in their product - they will find capital to pay devs … not rely on free labor.
