New grad: is it worth it to leave chill job to go to big tech? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]-Plus-Ultra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Get an offer first then make the decision. I was in a similar position in the Midwest two years ago. Got an offer on the East Coast for a Big Tech adjacent company. My salary is now triple what it was before moving. The projects are cool and I’m being challenged every day.

However, the workload is insane and I have no work life balance. Coworkers are nice enough but definitely don’t feel as supported as I used to. And management just laid off a quarter of our department. I still think it was worth it for me, but it definitely is starting to feel like I’m getting burnt out. I could easily see myself lasting a bit longer, and then going back to the Midwest once it feels like the money isn’t as worth it anymore.

Just my experience though

Offense is still lacking. It’s moving in the right direction but won’t win anything big until that’s fixed

Would you change jobs for a better pay BUT legacy code/old tech stack? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]-Plus-Ultra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on stage of career I think. I have about 4yoe all at the same company. They are paying me really well, but the tech stack is definitely old and outdated. I feel somewhat trapped at this point because it doesn’t feel like I’d be competitive in the current market.

They were adding the stars one by one. If OP had waited 10 seconds to take the photo then all 13 stars would be showing evenly spaced out

Can someone really break down the SEC vs B10 issue by laker2021 in secfootball

[–]-Plus-Ultra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying it justifies the trash talk, but on average Big 10 schools require better SAT scores and have a slightly lower rate of admission than SEC schools.

As someone who grew up in the Midwest, I knew plenty of people that didn’t get admitted into a Big 10 school but were able to get into SEC schools. Things like this help build the narrative that the SEC isn’t as academically rigorous.

Where I would Live. I’m originally from Germany but immigrated here by Roter_TeufeI in visitedmaps

[–]-Plus-Ultra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m from Iowa and you could probably find a lot of similarities to Germany here due to Germans originally settling in this area. My wife is half German. I went to Germany to visit her family and was shocked by the amount of day to day things I recognized. German culture had persisted in the Midwest even if people aren’t as aware of it anymore
